Visa Security Impersonation Reports for 08 7371 2624

A contributor has reported a scam call from 08 7371 2624 (also written as 0873712624) involving impersonation of a Visa Security representative. The caller, claiming to be named "Steve", contacted the recipient alleging fraudulent credit card activity originating from New Zealand. Despite the recipient not owning a credit card since 2004, the scammer persisted with the false claim, describing phantom purchases on PayPal and Amazon to establish false urgency.

The core objective of the call from 08 7371 2624 was to extract sensitive payment card information. The scammer requested the recipient confirm their card number, claiming this was necessary to cancel the compromised card and issue a replacement. This is a classic indicator of financial credential harvesting - legitimate financial institutions never request card details during unsolicited calls.

What the Caller from 08 7371 2624 Said and Did

The contributor engaged with the caller strategically, playing unfamiliar with technical terms to buy time. When asked to confirm card details, the recipient deflected by claiming to be in a bubble bath and requesting a callback. The scammer's response - questioning why someone would bathe at that time of day - reveals the caller's attempt to maintain psychological pressure and assess vulnerability.

During the conversation with 0873712624, the contributor heard suspicious technical sounds including clicking noises and a loud screeching sound that the contributor attributed to audio manipulation or interference tactics. When the recipient mentioned the noise was hurting their hearing aids, the scammer attempted to maintain the call by suggesting they could continue later. This flexibility in timing, combined with the fabricated emergency, are hallmarks of determined financial scams.

Escalation and Follow-Up Calls from Related Numbers

Immediately after the initial call from 08 7371 2624, the recipient received a follow-up call from a nearly identical number: 08 7371 2708. This pattern of rapid sequential calls from similar numbers is consistent with organised scam operations cycling through contact lists or using dynamic number spoofing. The follow-up call from 0873712624's sibling number suggests coordinated activity designed to catch victims off-guard if they declined the first contact.

The recipient experienced two separate calls from 08 7371 2708 within a short timeframe before being able to block it. This repeated attempt to reconnect indicates the scammer perceived a potential opportunity to secure financial information, even after initial rejection.

What to Do If You Receive a Call from 08 7371 2624

If 08 7371 2624 contacts you:

  • Do not: Confirm card details, provide banking information, or stay on the line while the scammer builds rapport
  • Do not: Follow instructions to perform any security steps, even if the caller claims urgency
  • Do: Hang up immediately and contact your actual financial institution directly using the phone number on the back of your card or their official website
  • Do: Block 08 7371 2624 and monitor for similar numbers like 08 7371 2708
  • Do: Never call back numbers provided by unsolicited callers claiming to represent banks or payment processors

Verify Claims About Card Fraud Independently

If you receive a call claiming fraud on your card, do not use contact information the caller provides. Instead, hang up and call your bank or card issuer directly using the verified number on your card statement or official website. Legitimate financial institutions never ask you to confirm full card details during unexpected security calls. A genuine fraud investigation would verify your identity through pre-registered security questions or require you to visit your branch in person.

Scammer. Indian. Poor English. Claims to be from Visa Security. Said some lady in New Zealand had links to my credit card and bought 2 items for $1,800 and $2,400.

I told him he had my permission to cancel these charges. He asked me for my card number. I said you should have those details if you are calling me about it.

He then asked me how much I had in my account so he could verify. I said I had several accounts. One had about $25,000. The next one had about $350,000 and the last one was a recent inheritance of just under $2 million.

(That all lies - I WISH that I had that sort of money)

I think this excited me as he said “well how about we remotely log into your account and we can do your refund”

I said “sure, let me put you on speaker”

I then hung up. I then got a call from another number, which I think may have been him as the second number was the same except the last digit was different. I didn’t bother answering that one.

I am sick of these scammers!!!

I know it’s best not to engage with them, but I would rather waste their time so to prevent them actually conning some little old man / lady.

Male called “Steve” (indian) called from.

“Visa Security”

Claimed that someone in New Zealand was using my credit card (I haven’t had a credit card since about 2004) over the past few days.

Asked if I knew of anyone in New Zealand that may have my card.

Then said it had been used in various platforms.

Played dumb and asked what that meant, telling him I’m a little old lady (I’m not)

He then said it was used for PayPal and Amazon purchases.

He asked me to confirm my card number so he could cancel the current one and re-issue new card.

I told him I was having a relaxing bubble bath and asked if he could call me back.

He said he would wait and then asked why would someone be having a bath at this time of day. I told him old people.

I then heard a few clicks on the line then this screeching noise and told him this was hurting my hearing aids, so told him I would have to hang up and call him when I finished my bubble bath.

I then hung up and blocked the number; but immediately after, got a call from a similar number: 08 7371 2708.

I declined this call, but before I could block, it called me again.
