I received a scam call from this number claiming to be associated with the ATO (Australian Taxation Office), stating, "Whoever pays tax for business (name of the business), please give us a call." Since the ATO has my name on file, it is clear this is a scam.

Well your accountant isn't very good at their job, are they? The ATO does make outbound phone calls and they do need to pass you on POI. You can pretend you think it's a scam all you like, you and I both know that they only asked for a trivial piece of info like an address listed on file and you used that as an excuse to stick your head in the sand and pretend as though you don't have a debt (also an indication your accountant is bad at there job).

Received a voice message from ATO to call back 1300 466 859 with personal tax file and ABN. I've checked ATO's official website for the contact numbers and saw this number on the website so I called back. It's the ATO's debt collection department!!

Just had a call from this number. Asked me to provide information to verify who I was. Spoke with our business accountant who said the ATO will never ask for your personal information over the phone. They are SCAMMERS.

This is a SCAM number claiming to be ATO. Those people who say it is not are the SCAMMERS !!!!

Got a call from told ato on private number asked me a couple of questions I questions them back calling me on a private number etc so they gave me this 1300 number which I googled which warned of scam so I call the real ato and they say someone had tried to called from them. But im not in debt according to 2 ato letters 23rd and 27th less around 10 days previous I was.70c credit. Id had my bas and personal tax put in by itp to close together according to one of the letters so the payg credits had not counted yet creating a debt which had been handed to this company who is debt collecting for the tax office even though the debt was a mistake so now after making numerous calls to ato itp I am over being on hold to this crap and will just wait till they call back again if they have not sorted it out themselves. BUT BASICLY SEEMS TO BE A REAL DEBT COLLECTION AGENCY WORKING WITH THE REAL ATO.

Called claiming to be the ATO about my company. I have a tax agent. The ATO do not call you and ask to call back with your Tax File Number. This has been happening from this number since 2014. Whay have they not been shut down?

All over the ATO website it states not to give your TFN, ABN, bank account details, etc over the phone. Yet when you call this 1300 number, that is exactly what you get asked for. How can you verify whether it is a legitimate ATO call or a scam?? BTW my tax was paid up to date when I received the call.

I believe this is a scam purporting to be the ATO.

The ATO run many campaigns, one particular campaign is to contact clients who have a debt or a payment plan which has defaulted. The ATO is doing you a favour by advising you of your debt, or defaulted payment plan. When the ATO call if you are unavailable they will leave a message for you to call back the "early debt collections area" on 1300 466 859. It is not a scam, if you don't return the call then your debt case may be escalated to a higher department where further action will commence - such as garnishing your bank account, and even starting legal action. Its in your best interest to return the call ASAP, of face the consequences.

Today I got a call from this number they asked my bank & personal details. I gave them most of details except Medicare. Bit worried now? What to do ?

Its a scam they sound very professional Australian voices and very very polite DO NOT give them information. If it was the tax office they write out to you. GIVE THEM NO INFORMATION. DOn't FALL VICTIM. SCUM BAGS WHO WORK IN THIS SCAM I HOPE BAD KARMA FOLLOWS YOU.
