In today's digital age, it's crucial to stay alert about phone calls that may not be what they seem. One such number that has raised concerns among Australians is 0473 816 200. This number has been flagged as suspicious, allegedly linked to someone impersonating a member of the Commonwealth Bank (CBA).

Users have reported receiving calls from this number where the caller claimed to be a CBA representative. The scam typically involves the caller stating that there is a suspicious transaction needing immediate attention – often involving a large sum of money allegedly leaving the victim's account. In the analysed case, the individual reported being told that nearly $500 had been spent in the US without their knowledge. This could be a common tactic used by scammers to provoke anxiety and prompt the victim into providing personal information.

As indicated by user experiences, the conversation escalates with the caller requesting sensitive information, such as mobile phone type and confirmation of personal contact details, under the guise of securing the account. However, when the user asked to verify the transaction, the caller's hesitation became apparent. After a reluctant agreement to recall at a more convenient time, the promised follow-up call never materialised, raising more red flags.

The classification of 0473 816 200 as suspicious is warranted given the nature of the calls. It highlights a possible phishing scam where the goal is to extract personal information by creating a false sense of urgency. It’s essential to remember that legitimate financial institutions, like CBA, typically do not ask for sensitive information in unsolicited calls and would follow secure protocols when needing to verify transactions.

How to Handle Calls from This Number

  • Do Not Share Personal Information: Never provide personal, financial, or sensitive information to unknown callers, no matter how convincing they may sound.

Got a call from this number, claiming to be a CBA team member, trying to help me by blocking a suspiciously looking transaction made on by behalf earlier in the day. When I asked where it was made, started saying it was in US about $500. Then started asking me about my mobile type and confirmation of the phone number. Offered to reverse/block transaction and was planning to send me text message for it. I’d to hung up due to a meeting and asked him to call me back in two hours. No one called back. Didn’t see any fraudulent transactions on my card or account.
