Scam Reports for 0468 208 083
A single contributor has reported a suspicious call from 0468 208 083 (also written as 0468208083) on a Friday evening at 19:43. The caller claimed to be 'Mark Richards' with an Indian accent and used the contributor's full name despite having no legitimate reason to contact them.
The interaction raised immediate red flags. When the contributor asked what the caller wanted, the caller responded by repeatedly asking for name confirmation rather than explaining the purpose of the call. This pattern of evasive questioning followed by attempts to verify personal information is typical of social engineering scams, where callers gather enough information to fabricate legitimacy or access accounts.
What the Caller from 0468 208 083 Did
The contributor who received a call from 0468 208 083 described the interaction as deliberately evasive. When asked directly what he wanted, the caller ('Mark Richards') ignored the question and instead pushed back with his own question: 'Are you [name]?' This reversal of questioning, combined with already knowing the contributor's name, suggests the caller had prior information and was attempting to use it to establish false credibility.
The contributor noted the caller's voice was 'unnerving' - possibly indicating aggressive tone, an unfamiliar accent creating trust concerns, or the overall unsettling nature of unexplained personal identification by a stranger. The fact that the caller wouldn't state his actual business purpose despite being directly asked is consistent with scam patterns where callers avoid committing to false claims early in the conversation.
Timing and Caller Behaviour
The call to 0468 208 083 arrived on a Friday evening at 19:43, which falls outside typical business hours. This timing aligns with scam call patterns that target people when they may be more relaxed and less guarded. The caller's strategy of leading with name verification rather than explaining his purpose suggests he was testing whether the number was valid and active before proceeding with a pitch.

He said “well firstly I want to know is that you [my name]?”
Me “what do you want?”
Him “are you [my name]?”
I just hung up and blocked as his voice was unnerving.
Same day missed call as someone else reported, don't have any trading accounts so looks like a scam attempt

WRITE A REVIEWFrequently Asked Questions
What should I do if 0468 208 083 calls and already knows my name?
Do not confirm your identity. Ask the caller to state their business and organisation first. Legitimate callers will explain their purpose immediately. If they won't answer direct questions, hang up and block 0468208083. Data breaches sometimes circulate personal information, so scammers may have your name without being legitimate.
Why is it dangerous when a caller asks 'Is this [your name]?' instead of introducing themselves?
This is a classic scam tactic. By making you confirm your identity first, the caller establishes fake credibility and can later claim they 'have you on record' or 'have your details.' Legitimate organisations identify themselves and explain their purpose before asking you to confirm anything. The caller to 0468 208 083 used this reversal, which is a red flag.
Should I call back 0468208083 if I miss the call?
No. Do not return calls from unknown numbers like 0468 208 083. Scammers often use call-back tactics to establish two-way contact or verify that your number is monitored. If the call was legitimate, they will leave a voicemail with a callback number and organisation name you can independently verify.
What does 'evasive questioning' mean in the context of the 0468 208 083 call?
The caller refused to answer 'What do you want?' and instead repeated his own question. This avoidance of stating business purpose is used in scams to prevent you from immediately rejecting the pitch. By engaging you in identity verification first, the caller builds rapport before making false claims. It's a manipulation tactic.
Is it safe to answer calls from unknown numbers during evening hours?
It's safer to let unknown calls go to voicemail, regardless of time. The call from 0468 208 083 arrived at 19:43 on Friday - outside business hours, which is when many scammers operate. Legitimate organisations call during business hours and leave voicemails. If it's genuinely important, they will try again or send a formal notice.
What should I do if I already gave personal information to this caller?
Contact your bank, email provider, and any financial institutions immediately. Change your passwords. Monitor your accounts for unauthorised activity. If you provided banking or identity document details to someone from 0468 208 083, consider placing a fraud alert with your bank and checking your credit report for suspicious accounts. Report the incident to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au.
