Government Impersonation Reports for 02 8528 5355
Two contributors have reported suspicious calls from 02 8528 5355 (also written as 0285285355) that impersonate Australian government agencies. The reports describe coordinated social engineering tactics designed to trick recipients into revealing sensitive financial and account information.
The primary report details a highly convincing impersonation of the Australia Cyber Security Centre (ACSC). The caller from 02 8528 5355 claimed to be investigating a fraudulent overseas transaction on the recipient's credit card, specifically mentioning a Bitcoin purchase. The script was sophisticated enough that the recipient initially engaged with the conversation. Only when the recipient independently verified their account did they notice the caller had contradicted themselves, prompting verification with the actual ACSC on 1300 CYBER1. The legitimate ACSC confirmed this is an active scam targeting cryptocurrency account holders.
What Callers from 02 8528 5355 Claim
The impersonation script used by callers from 0285285355 focuses on creating urgency around fraudulent financial activity. The caller mentions a specific overseas transaction and Bitcoin purchase to establish credibility, then offers to help the recipient "safeguard" their cards and cancel the transaction. This approach exploits natural consumer concern about unauthorised transactions and positions the scammer as a helpful authority figure.
A second report describes a different impersonation attempt from 02 8528 5355, this time claiming to represent federal police investigating an unnamed matter. This call used an interactive voice response system requiring the recipient to press a key to connect to an operator, a robocall tactic commonly used in scams to appear automated and official.
The common thread across both reports is that callers from 02 8528 5355 establish false authority (ACSC or federal police) and request engagement from the recipient, with the ultimate goal of obtaining access to banking credentials or cryptocurrency account details.
Report Patterns and Tactics
Both reports received on 02 8528 5355 came through answered calls to the recipient's phone. The first report arrived on 21 May 2026, while the second came on 20 May, suggesting this number may be used for coordinated scam campaigns over short periods.
The impersonation tactic is consistent with known credential harvesting scams. The ACSC impersonation specifically targets cryptocurrency holders because they may hold significant digital assets. The use of a recorded message requiring key-press response on the second call indicates the scammers may be using automated systems to maximise call volume before the number is reported.

Best way to be busted by COPS.
Pretend your a COP & call people scamming.
This idiot can expect a knock on his tent.
Call received claiming to be Australia Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) investigating a fraudulent transaction on my credit card from overseas for the purchase of Bitcoin - wanted to help me cancel the transaction and safeguard my cards.
Very plausible script and I only became suspicious when I checked my account to see if there was a pending transaction and he contradicted himself with something he said. I called 1300 CYBER1 to verify the caller was from ASCS and they confirmed this is a scam targeting crypto account holders to try and get access to their account details. ASCS do not make these types of calls and only ever call individuals if you have contacted them first.
Bloke claiming to be from federal cops about an investigation, had to press a key to connect - smells dodgy
