Personal Information Request Scam for 02 7628 6919

A contributor has reported a phishing call from 02 7628 6919 (also written as 0276286919) where the caller repeatedly requested sensitive personal information without identifying themselves or their organisation. The contributor described the caller as male with a South Asian accent who opened with "may I begin with your name, address and date of birth" and continued to repeat the same question when asked to identify the caller first.

This approach is a classic phishing tactic - the caller attempts to extract personal data without establishing legitimacy or purpose. The fact that 0276286919 is an interstate landline from NSW adds to the suspicious nature, as legitimate organisations typically identify themselves immediately and explain why they need information before requesting it.

What the Caller from 02 7628 6919 Attempted

The contributor's report indicates the caller from 02 7628 6919 used a direct approach, immediately asking for three pieces of identifying information: full name, residential address, and date of birth. When the contributor questioned who was calling, rather than providing identification, the caller simply repeated the same request. This repetition despite being challenged is a strong indicator of a scripted phishing operation.

The refusal to identify the caller's organisation or purpose before requesting personal data is the core red flag. Legitimate service providers, government agencies, financial institutions, and utility companies always identify themselves first and explain the reason for contact before asking for sensitive information.

Phishing call. Male with south Asian accent simply said "may I begin with your name, address and date of birth", when I asked who is this he repeated the question. No, you may not have that info, not to an incoming call from a strange unknown interstate landline number, exactly like every spam call I've been getting for years.

Why would a scammer ask for name, address, and date of birth from 02 7628 6919?

These three pieces of information are fundamental identity markers used in identity theft, account takeover, and fraud. Once scammers have your name, address, and DOB, they can attempt to access existing accounts, apply for credit in your name, or sell your information. What should I do if I already gave information to 0276286919?

How can I tell if a caller is legitimate before giving information to 02 7628 6919 or similar numbers?

Legitimate organisations always identify themselves by name first, explain the purpose of contact, and are happy to have you verify their identity. If you receive a call claiming to be from your bank, the ATO, or any service provider, always hang up and call them back using the number on your official statement or their verified website. Never use a number the caller provides.

Is 02 7628 6919 a real landline or spoofed number?

The number 02 7628 6919 appears as an NSW landline based on the 02 area code, but scammers frequently spoof legitimate landline numbers to appear credible. Should I block 02 7628 6919 on my phone?

Yes, blocking 0276286919 is a sensible precaution. However, scammers using spoofed numbers often call from different numbers on subsequent attempts. The more important action is to never provide personal information to unidentified callers, regardless of the number displayed.

What if I think the caller from 02 7628 6919 might have been from a government agency?

Government agencies (ATO, Services Australia, ASIC, ACMA) have strict protocols about requesting personal information and always identify themselves clearly at the start of a call. If you're unsure, hang up and independently call the agency's official number from your records or their website. Genuine agencies expect this verification step and will not be offended.
