I received the same call saying they were from the Department of Human Services. I said I didn't feel comfortable giving personal details over the phone and to send me a letter. I've since contacted Centrelink, they said the reference number is not one of there's but the debt collection office's specific reference. When I gave her my details she checked my account and there was actually a debt owing that matched to the amount that I was told by the debt collection agency. Therefore unfortunately it is legitimate but the we they go about their business makes it seem shady. If you have concerns never give personal details over the phone and if you are unsure you can contact Centrelink directly on 1800 132 468 (feedback and complaints hotline from the Centrelink website). Don't be surprised if the reference number from the collection agency doesn't match Centrelink's reference numbers and you can launch an appeal if you believe the debt has been raised incorrectly. However, I was advised not to ignore the Debt Collection's notice because they can affect your credit rating.

Despite their laughable attempt to convince us with Mr "T" below. This is such a blatant scam. Most Government websites have warnings about these. Do not give your details.

Yes, they state they are from DHS. It is a federal offence to impersonate a federal officer. When this happens report to DHS or the federal minister.

I got a call at home. The person knew my name and said she was calling from the "department of human services" and asking my address and date of birth to verify my identity. I asked more details of which company they were calling from and she told me that she can't give that information because that will breach the confidentiality agreement. That she had my details infront of her and just needed to verify my identity. She offer to give me a number to call back. The number is 1300 134 927 and she also gave me a reference number. Sounds like a Scam to me.
