According to user reviews, this number appears to exploit trust with a well-crafted scam, impersonating the Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) to extract personal information from unsuspecting individuals.

A Closer Look at the Scam

Based on an alarming report received on 9 January 2025, this number called a user multiple times, indicating that it was flagged as suspected spam. When the user decided to call back, they were greeted by someone claiming to be from the CBA fraud department who cited personal details such as name, address, and the first eight digits of their credit card, creating an air of legitimacy. The caller attempted to convince the user that there were suspicious transactions exceeding $2500 and that they were required to confirm their identity to prevent these transactions from being processed.

However, the user acted wisely by hanging up and contacting CBA directly, only to discover that no transactions were pending on their card. This highlights a common tactic used by scammers, wherein they rely on the partial card number and personal information they possess to manipulate victims into providing more information.

Received 4 calls one after he other flagged as suspected spam. Did not answer but because of the insistence, called back. Call was answered by "CBA fraud department" and quoted my name, address and first 8 digits of my credit card.

He claimed there were multiple suspicious transactions pending on my credit card totalling over $2500 from overseas B&B and Abu Dhabi. Told me they would not yet appear on my statement as he had held them but needed to confirm with card holder before he stopped payment. Said I would call CBA direct and he insisted I was already speaking to them and unless I confirmed my identity transactions would be released for payment. Hung up and called CBA who confirmed this call was not from CBA and no suspicious transactions were on my card. First 8 digits on card are common to all customers and unless he had the last digits he could not do anything.
