The phone number 0485 972 509 / 0485972509 has emerged as a significant concern among users, with numerous reports classifying it as a high-risk scam. Both the method of approach and the nature of the calls point towards fraudulent activities that can have serious financial implications for unsuspecting recipients.

Type of Scam

Reports indicate that this number operates a scam primarily revolving around purported banking notifications and telecommunications offers. The most common scenario involves an automated message claiming to be from ANZ regarding an unauthorised transaction, leading users to worry and feel pressured to respond. In another instance, it masquerades as Telstra, tempting users to call back, which can result in hefty phone charges.

Call Experiences

  • Automated Messages: Users report receiving automated calls supposedly from "Brenda" at ANZ, notifying them of a suspect transaction. Given that the mass of recipients do not possess any account with ANZ, this raises significant red flags about the legitimacy of the communication.
  • High Call Costs: Individuals who have called back describe being placed on hold, only to find their phone bills accruing additional charges—a classic tactic of call-back scams designed to exploit unaware victims.

I received a call from an automated system claiming to be "Brenda" from ANZ, stating there was an unauthorized payment attempt of $1,000 on my debit card. The call ended abruptly when I could not leave a message as the mailbox was full. I have now blocked this number, especially since I do not have an account with ANZ.
