The caller did not leave a voicemail as instructed. I called the number back to verify before blocking and reporting it, but when the call was answered, there was no response from the other end. I could hear what seemed like an Indian call center in the background.
Yep - same as below. First text saying "Mum this is my new number".
This number asked me to pay an account on behalf of my Son, who according to this number, dropped his phone. Definitely a scam.
Scam!!!! BEWARE.
I received a message in WhatsApp this morning from my daughter in Miami (I am in Australia) who said she had dropped her phone and broken it and was in the process of setting up a new phone. She asked me to save this number as her new number which I did.
I then text her back to see how she was going over there and she said great and then asked me if I could help her with something. Naturally, I text back ‘Of course’.
She text that she had to pay for furniture which she had ordered and they needed the money in the account before they will send it out today so could I please OSKO them the $4.643.00 and she will transfer it back to me once she got her new phone working.
It was all so convincing with all the love heart emoji’s etc. However I didn’t have that much cash in the bank so I offered to call them and put it on my credit card. She said they couldn’t do that, could I transfer the money from my credit card to my savings account, pay them by OSKO and then she will put the money back on my credit card.
Now my kids have been raised to be financially astute so for her to suggest I withdraw cash from my credit card at 30% interest + 2% withdrawal fee was the real alarm bell for me.
Of course I told her no way would I do that and said I was sure her brother would gladly help her out. She asked me if I could text him to do it because her phone was still being set up.
I went onto messenger and group messaged him AND HER (to keep her in the loop with the conversation) that she wanted to know if he could send the money via OSKO ASAP and next thing my daughter texts back and said.
“What are you talking about mum”? “What money”???
Scammers had hacked her WhatsApp account and she had no idea. She is now sending a message to ALL of her contacts asking them not to send money for her.
Be careful with ANY text messages asking for money, even if they are family! These criminals are very good at what they do so beware.
