Understanding the Risks of 0450 711 389
The phone number 0450 711 389 has been flagged by users across Australia as a potentially suspicious number associated with a type of scam involving text messages. The reports suggest it is used to trick individuals into believing they are receiving urgent communication from a family member.
The Scam in Detail
One user reported receiving a text message from this number, claiming to be their child who apparently broke their phone. The message requested the recipient to message via WhatsApp to a different number, alongside an urgent plea for help. This classical impersonation tactic is designed to exploit the natural instinct to assist loved ones in distress.
- Believability: Scammers often mask their identity in ways that make their story seem plausible. The use of familial terminology ("Mum") creates an immediate emotional bond, leading many to feel compelled to respond.
- Response Discrepancy: The report highlighted that when the recipient contacted their actual children, one was unresponsive, adding to the confusion and thus increasing the chance of falling for the scam.
How to Respond
If you receive a message from 0450 711 389 or any number claiming to hold urgent news from a relative, exercise caution. Here are some steps to protect yourself:
- Verify: Always double-check with your family members through their known contact numbers before taking any action.
- Don't Engage: Do not respond to strange messages that request assistance or information.
- Report: Alert your friends and family to the potential scam and consider reporting the number to relevant authorities.

I received a text from the number +61 450 711 389 saying "Hey Mum, I smashed my phone. Can you whatsapp me heres my new number +61 485 838 244 x, it is urgent please.
Believable for me as I have multiple offspring with phones who this has happened to before - I did think it was weird that whichever of them it was, would have to change their number. I rang their correct numbers first and some got back to me but not the most 'phone breaky' offspring so I tried to contact both numbers to see if the offspring was ok.
I got no answer by phone or whats app.
