Understanding the Threat from 0447 372 742

In recent weeks, numerous reports have circulated regarding a mobile number, 0447 372 742 / 0447372742, identified as sending unsolicited verification codes. Many Australians have woken up to multiple messages in the early hours, receiving text alerts that leave them puzzled and concerned. But what does it all mean? Is this a harmless mistake, or something far more sinister?

What Users Are Reporting

Users are predominantly claiming that they have received SMS messages from this number containing verification codes that they did not request. Reviewers have raised alarm over receiving multiple texts—sometimes as many as twelve—over just a few minutes, often during ungodly hours of the morning. Reports date as far back as October 2022, yet concerns are still prevalent.

Classification: Scam

The overwhelming majority of users classify 0447 372 742 / 0447372742 as a scam number. The unsolicited nature of these verification messages suggests a form of smishing, which employs deceptive tactics to scare individuals into revealing personal information. This type of scam can lead to identity theft or unauthorised access to accounts if users mistakenly interact with fraudulent links or phone calls prompted by these texts.

How Does It Work?

Most reported cases indicate that individuals—especially those currently with providers like Optus and Telstra—are receiving these messages without any link to their online activity. Users speculate that the number may be spoofed, used to disguise the true malicious intent behind the messages. One notable concern among users is that scammers could use this as a tactic to test the validity of phone numbers, gathering information for future attempts to compromise victims' accounts.

Steps to Protect Yourself

  • Ignore and Delete: If you receive a message from this number, do not engage. Simply delete it.
  • Block the Number: Use your phone's settings to block the sender. This prevents future unsolicited texts.
  • Report the Number: Report any suspicious activity to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) and your mobile provider.
  • Protect Your Information: Be cautious about sharing personal information online or over the phone, and consider using two-factor authentication with well-known companies to help safeguard your accounts.

Conclusion

The number 0447 372 742 / 0447372742 is undeniably linked to a significant warning sign for Australian phone users. By staying vigilant and informed through services like Reverseau and employing effective measures to shield yourself from spam, you can better navigate these uncertain communications. Stay informed about your phone communications, and never hesitate to reach out to community resources if you feel threatened or confused about unsolicited messages.

Yesterday I noticed I’d received 2 verification codes 3:53 am, I then received a phone call from 0438949702 at 1:27 pm saying they were checking on fraudulent activity on my account. They new the time and asked me if I knew a person in California using my account on eBay and Amazon. I then asked which account and they said my debit card I asked which bank they were with and they replied Bendigo; I don’t have any accounts with them so said no thanks and hung up. This scam of sending verification codes is the first step, don’t give any information! Not even confirming your name.

I'm also a Optus customer here. Received 2 verification text message within 10 minutes. Verification text message are often used as part of "Two Factors Authentication" to login securely to websites or services. Wouldn't be surprised if Optus data leaks/hackers are trying to login one of the many services Australian using and unable to because they don't have access to the random verification code we received.

Received "Your verification code is: xxxxxx" from this number at 3.14 am. Did not asked for a verification in the middle of the night when I was asleep. Checked all my accounts and cards looked ok. Checked here everybody else reported the same. It is an attempted fraud but how does it work. The other side is able to see if you have read the message and deduce that your number is active?

I have received two verification code messages just now. I am NOT an Optus customer. No doubt the number is spoofed and a scam trying to get access to something.

I am not, nor have I ever been, an Optus customer... Seems like a lot of people are trying to link it to the Optus data breach... No discernible link as far as I'm concerned.
