Callback Lure SMS Reports for 04 2930 0977

Three contributors have reported suspicious activity from 04 2930 0977 (also written as 0429300977) within a 24-hour period. The pattern centres on callback lure SMS messages impersonating a Subaru dealership. Two separate reports describe nearly identical messages received late at night, both claiming to follow up on a Subaru Crosstrek enquiry that was never made. The messages are addressed to incorrect names ("Hi Hjb") and reference a dealership located on the opposite side of the country from where the recipients live. This mismatch between the message content and recipient details is a clear red flag.

One contributor also reported a hang-up call from 0429300977, suggesting the number may be used for multiple contact attempts across both voice and SMS channels.

What Callers from 04 2930 0977 Are Sending

The SMS messages from 04 2930 0977 follow a callback lure pattern designed to prompt recipients to respond or call back. The exact message reported reads: "Hi Hjb. Thank you for your enquiry on the Subaru Crosstrek. When would be the best time for me to call? John Melville Subaru." Contributors have emphasised that they never made any vehicle enquiries and have never visited the referenced dealership.

The late-night timing of these messages (between 8:26 PM and 8:32 PM) is unusual for legitimate dealership follow-ups. One contributor received a hang-up call from 0429300977 at 20:37 (8:37 PM) the same evening, suggesting coordinated contact attempts. The caller did not leave a voicemail or explanation for the call.

Report Patterns and Timing

All three reports about 04 2930 0977 were received within the same 24-hour window (29 April 2026), with SMS messages arriving late evening. Two SMS reports came within minutes of each other (8:26 PM and 8:32 PM), and a related hang-up call followed shortly after (8:37 PM). This clustering suggests either multiple SMS blasts to random or harvested numbers, or a targeted campaign using 0429300977 as the originating number.

The Telstra mobile service associated with this number may have been compromised or spoofed. Contributors noted the messages do not match their actual behaviour or location, indicating the sender either has incorrect contact data or is using a generic callback lure targeting multiple recipients.

Had a hang up call from this number. It called me at 20:37 pm.

Why do that? Just say “oh sorry I think I called the wrong person”

Annoying = yes. Creepy = absolutely. Stalker = possibly?

I got this at 8:32 PM on a Wednesday night. Think it’s a bit odd to receive an SMS late at night.

I don’t drive. Have never been to a car dealership.

I googled the apparent dealership and is on the other side of the country to where I live. I have never been to that part of the country.

It’s not even addressed to me!

It reads as follows.

“Hi Hjb. Thank you for your enquiry on the Subaru Crosstrek. When would be the best time for me to call? John Melville Subaru”

Received a text message from this number at 8:26 PM.

Clearly is not my name.

I have never been interested in a Subaru, let alone thought of even looking at one.

Got this suspicious message late night:

Hi Hjb. Thank you for your enquiry on the Subaru Crosstrek. When would be the best time for me to call? John Melville Subaru.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 04 2930 0977 a legitimate Subaru dealership?

No. Contributors who received SMS from 0429300977 claiming to be from John Melville Subaru confirmed the dealership is located on the opposite side of the country from where they live, and they never made any vehicle enquiry. This is a classic callback lure tactic using a business name to appear legitimate. Contact a dealership directly using their official website or phone number if you want to enquire about vehicles, rather than responding to unsolicited SMS from 04 2930 0977.

Why would someone send a message from 04 2930 0977 to the wrong name?

The SMS from 0429300977 addressed recipients as "Hjb" rather than their actual names, suggesting the scammer either has outdated contact data, harvested a contact list from a data breach, or is using generic callback lure messages sent to many numbers at random. Legitimate businesses verify customer details before sending follow-ups. If you receive a message from 04 2930 0977 with the wrong name, it is a strong indicator of a scam or mass spam campaign.

What is a callback lure and why is 04 2930 0977 using one?

A callback lure is when a scammer sends a message designed to prompt you to call them back or engage further. The SMS from 04 2930 0977 asking "When would be the best time for me to call?" is phrased to make you respond, either by replying to the message or calling the number. Once you engage, scammers can attempt to obtain personal information, payment details, or access to your accounts. Do not respond to SMS from 0429300977 under any circumstances.

I received a hang-up call from 04 2930 0977 - should I be concerned?

Yes. A contributor reported a hang-up call from 0429300977 at 8:37 PM the same evening other SMS messages were sent from this number. Hang-up calls are sometimes used as a callback trigger tactic - the scammer calls, hangs up, then waits for you to call back out of curiosity. Do not return calls to unknown numbers like 04 2930 0977. If the number calls again, block it and report it to your mobile provider.

Should I report 0429300977 to the police if I receive contact from this number?

If you believe you have been targeted by a scam or have suffered financial loss, you can report it to local police. However, for SMS spam and unwanted calls from 0429300977, report directly to the ACMA (acma.gov.au) and your mobile provider by forwarding the SMS to 0429 999 888. If the activity involves fraud or cybercrime, also report to ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au. These agencies can investigate patterns and take action more effectively than individual police reports.

Can I block 04 2930 0977 on my phone?

Yes, absolutely. After receiving an SMS from 0429300977, block the number in your phone settings to prevent further contact. On most Australian mobile phones, you can block a number by opening the message, selecting options, and choosing "Block" or "Report as Spam." You should also report the number to your provider (Telstra in this case) by forwarding the SMS to 0429 999 888, which helps protect other customers from 04 2930 0977.
