    Mine said Melbourne City Council survey. Got it day after I had Google searched Council and also went down and filled in council paper form with my mobile number. How did scammers know, or get my mobile number?

    Most likely a scam, yes, as 1) the message does not apply 2) it is not addressed to an individual' 3) the SRO would most likely either reach out via email, mail or phone call and not text out of the blue Blocked the number straight away.

    Received a text “Your parcel can’t be delivered, custom fees (2.99 AUD) have not been paid.” Following an auspost link. I’m not silly enough to click that when I haven’t ordered anything.

    Beware scammer, my experience is as follows....

    I put up a Ad on Gumtree asked to be not texted gave an email in which they replied with:

    Where is it located at the moment?what's your final price? Why are you selling it? Does it need anything to be replace or repair?I'm a Squadron leader at Royal Australian Air Force and I have been currently deployed. I have limited phone access and that's why I prefer the sales through email. Regarding the payment, I can pay you through direct bank deposit (EFT), using PayPal instant bank wire transfer service. I will need your Account name, BSB and Account number. If you are not comfortable with that, you can set up a PayPal account properly at www.PayPal.com.auand I will make the payment through PayPal, this way, all I will need is your PayPal email address.

    I have also contacted my courier who will come for pick up and deliver it to my place in Darwin after the whole fund has been cleared into your acct. With the issue of my details, transferring the name of ownership and signing of all paperwork will be done by the pick up agent. If you are not comfortable with that, you can cancel the registration and I will buy Unregistered.

    Await your reply.

    Regards.

    Samantha Holmes.

    I just received an SMS stating that if I hadn't already, I still had time to move into the house I received my First Home Owner's grant for, with a link to: sro.vic.gov.au/firsthomeowner.

    Not sure why the State Revenue Office would be sending this though. If they don't know where I live, I think they have bigger problems than me, lol.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
