Identifying the Scam

As noted in a report from 3 May 2023, a user received a text message purportedly from 'PAYPA'L, containing a one-time password. This user had not initiated any transaction, leading them to investigate further. The follow-up call to 1300508941, which was suggested in the text, resulted in a conversation that raised numerous red flags.

The scammer on the line pretended to be helpful, urging the user to download the 'anydesk remote desktop' application. The user wisely refused to install the app, recognising the potential threat, at which point the caller immediately terminated the call. This experience offers a vital lesson for anyone receiving similar communications.

What Our Users Reviewed

Received a text from 'PAYPA'L with a one time password but I had not transacted. It said to call 1300508941 if I had a query. I called and the guy sounded genuine until he said to open up the app store and to download an app called 'anydesk remote desktop' so that they could block the fraudulent person trying to use my PayPal. This was a dead giveaway as they could get all my details once I had installed it. I told him I was not going to install anything on my phone and he being the fraudulent person. He hung up immediately. So BEWARE.
