Recently, a troubling report has emerged regarding the phone number 0431 017 537 / 0431017537. Many users have flagged this number as a scam attempt linked to a phishing scheme impersonating Commonwealth Bank of Australia (COMMBANK).

The Nature of the Scam

On the 3rd of July 2022, one concerned user reported receiving a deceptive text message from this number. The message claimed there had been an "outgoing car transaction" attempted from Belfast, Ireland, urging the recipient to click on a link to 'review activities'. However, this type of communication is a classic phishing tactic used by fraudsters to extract personal information.

How This Phishing Scam Works

The text message received encourages minimal suspicion but leads unsuspecting individuals to a fraudulent website. Users who interacted with the link reported warnings stating that it was a deceptive site which may compromise personal data such as passwords and credit card details. This kind of financial phishing scam is becoming increasingly common, particularly as cybercriminals exploit well-known institutions like banks for their nefarious activities.

Recognising Scam Messages

  • Suspicious Links: Always examine links before clicking. Genuine communications from banks will never ask you to follow an external link to verify account activity.
  • Unsolicited Messages: Be cautious of messages from unknown or unverified numbers, especially those that create a sense of urgency.
  • Errors in Communication: Look for grammatical errors or odd phrasing, which are indicators of a scam message.

What to Do If You Receive a Call or Message from This Number

If you receive communication from 0431 017 537 / 0431017537 or something similar, take heed:

  • Do not engage with the sender. Avoid clicking on any links or divulging personal information.
  • Report the number to the relevant authorities or your bank directly. By doing so, you contribute to national efforts in tackling telecommunication fraud.
  • Utilise services like Reverseau or a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to investigate unknown numbers further, discovering who called you and their reputation.

Conclusion

In summary, 0431 017 537 / 0431017537 is a malicious number associated with phishing attempts targeting users by falsely leveraging the Commonwealth Bank's credibility. Always stay vigilant and informed. Your cybersecurity relies largely on your ability to detect and respond to these scams effectively.
