Identifying the Scam: 0426 485 177

In recent weeks, the phone number 0426 485 177 has raised alarm bells among Australian users, being flagged repeatedly as a scam. This number cleverly impersonates Australia Post, employing tactics designed to deceive individuals into disclosing personal and financial information.

The Nature of the Scam

Users have reported receiving unsolicited text messages from this number, which appeared to originate from Australia Post and featured official-looking logos. The messages claimed that a delivery attempt had failed and prompted recipients to provide personal details to facilitate a new delivery order for a small fee. The supposed fee, presented as merely $2.10, is a tactic to lure individuals into providing their credit card information. However, many victims quickly realised that the tracking numbers provided did not exist on the official AusPost website, confirming suspicions of fraudulent activity.

Behaviour of the Caller

Common responses from affected individuals include a sense of urgency created by the timestamps of the messages, often sent in the early hours of the morning. The professional appearance of the messages coupled with the urgency tends to catch people off guard, eliciting an immediate reaction without thorough scrutiny. This is a typical method employed by scammers to reduce the likelihood of the message being cross-checked for authenticity.

Received a text with a link to what looked like an Australia Post website, very professional looking wanted me to enter my details and pay to have a parcel redirect because it couldn’t be delivered. The tracking number does not exist via Auspost. Likely scam.

Looks like a dangerous scam to me. They sent a text message from Aust Post with an official logo and the tracking number of an unsuccessful delivery item, at 4 am in the morning, saying they could not delivery the item to me. They asked me to provide my personal details so they can place an order for the new delivery. They charged me a very small amount for this order $2.1, and of course to pay for this amount, I must provide my credit card details. I checked this tracking number on the Aust Post web site, and it could not be found.
