Telstra Tech Support Impersonation Reports for 03 9962 0646

Two contributors have reported calls from 03 9962 0646 (also written as 0399620646) involving callers posing as Telstra representatives. The reports describe a specific pattern: callers claim to have detected a critical error message on the recipient's internet connection and attempt to gain remote access to personal devices.

One contributor received a call from 03 9962 0646 from a female caller with an Asian accent. When the recipient indicated they were having phone troubles and tried to end the call, the same caller rang back moments later using a different number (02 7264 2498), suggesting coordinated activity across multiple phone lines.

What Callers from 03 9962 0646 Request

The caller from 03 9962 0646 claimed to represent Telstra and stated the recipient had received a critical error message affecting their internet. After the initial call ended, the follow-up call from the same person on another number focused on gathering device information, asking what type of phone the recipient used and requesting they open Google to demonstrate access.

When the recipient mentioned their computer was in for repairs, the caller pivoted questions toward that device. This pattern - starting with internet error claims, then moving to device access requests - is typical of remote-access tech support scams where attackers gain control of personal devices to steal information or install malware.

Report Patterns and Caller Behaviour

The contributor who answered the call from 0399620646 noted the caller's persistence across multiple phone numbers within seconds, indicating this was not an accidental repeat dial. The second caller attempt on 02 7264 2498 from the same person suggests a deliberate strategy to reconnect if the initial call was rejected.

A second contributor reported that their phone's spam detection flagged 03 9962 0646 as spam. When they rang the number back to investigate, they encountered "more of the same dodgy numbers," suggesting the number may be part of a wider network of related scam phone lines.

A few seconds later I got a call from the same woman on another number 02 7264 2498. She wanted to know what sort of phone I had and me to open Google on my phone. I said I only used phone as a phone. Asked about my computer; I said it was in for repairs and it would be next week before I got it. Call cut.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the caller from 03 9962 0646 ring back on a different number?

The contributor who received the first call from 03 9962 0646 ended it when they mentioned phone troubles. Seconds later, the same female caller rang from 02 7264 2498. This rapid follow-up from an alternate number suggests the caller had multiple phone lines available and was using them strategically to reconnect with people who had hung up on 0399620646. This is a common tactic in coordinated scam operations.

What should I do if someone claiming to be Telstra calls from 03 9962 0646?

Hang up immediately. Legitimate Telstra representatives will not call claiming they've detected a critical error on your internet connection. If you're concerned about your Telstra service, contact Telstra directly using the number on your bill or visit their official website. Never provide device information or allow remote access based on an unsolicited call from 03 9962 0646.

Is it safe to ring back 03 9962 0646 if I missed the call?

No. One contributor who rang back 0399620646 after missing the call reported receiving "more of the same dodgy numbers," suggesting the line connects to a wider network of scam phone numbers. If you don't recognise the number, there is no legitimate reason to call it back.

What is remote-access tech support scam?

The caller from 03 9962 0646 asked the contributor to open Google on their phone and later asked about a computer in for repairs. This is part of a remote-access scam where the attacker tries to convince you to give them access to your device. Once they have access, they can steal passwords, banking details, or install malware. Legitimate tech support never initiates contact this way.

Why did 03 9962 0646 ask what type of phone I have?

The caller from 0399620646 asked this to understand what device they were targeting and to determine which instructions would work for gaining access. This information helps scammers craft more convincing requests tailored to your specific phone type. Never provide device details to unsolicited callers.

Should I report 03 9962 0646 to Telstra?

Yes. Contact Telstra's official fraud reporting channels (not by calling back 03 9962 0646 or any number provided by the scammer). You can report the impersonation attempt through Telstra's official customer support. Also report to ACMA at acma.gov.au and Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au. These reports help authorities identify and shut down coordinated scam operations using multiple phone numbers like 0399620646.
