    Had the wonderful Jason O'Connor from the ATO call me and leave a message saying to call the 83105583 in an attempt to stop the police taking me away and having me appear before the Commonwealth court house of my own territory - lucky for me I live in a state not a territory...

    Hi just received the same "automated message" (first time I heard a computer stammer over its words) This guy is as much a Jason as I am a full-blown Chinese gentleman.

    I look forward to "the police will be on my doorstep soon", and I'm sure that I will be "in my local court (stammer, mumble) soon" - if I am, it will be to give evidence against these scare tactics scammers.

    Don't even bother to call back - delete the message and go and have a cold beer with your obviously ill-gotten gains.

    Received a call from Jason O'Connor (02 8310 5583). As I have an ongoing Tax Objection, it was harder for me to outrightly think scam. However after my call with them (his supervisor called Mark Davis, YES, an Indian dude as well with english names) I called the ATO for verification who advised that they have been inundated with calls the last 7 days regarding the same scam - and yes some people did hand over money due to different circumstances or dealings with the ATO - making them vulnerable!

    Yeap, same Jason called me stating tax evasion, court and police lol.

    It is invasion of privacy for ATO or banks to call and leave voicemails stating what the matter is in relation too. They'll only state where they're calling from and request that you contact them back.

    I just received this message left on my answering machine.

    Thought I would Google the number as it didn't seem to be from the ATO.

    Good thing I did. Now I get to read that this one has been doing the rounds.

    Hope that get this one soon.

    Just received message from this number on my new landline, the number of which I have never given anybody. Seems it was the same automated Jason O'Connor that is mentioned in other comments. No mention of my name but I found it threatening to be told I had evaded tax and a case had been lodged against me and a police officer would appear at my door. Similarly, no mention of when or where this case was to be lodged. I will report this scam to the ATO but not through Jason's dodgy number!

    If you go the ATO's website (www.ato.gov.au) you will find numbers to call where you can:

    1) confirm the last genuine communication given by the ATO (thereby confirming that this scammer is NOT representing the ATO).

    2) report the details of this scam, so they can shut it down.

    They are very friendly and helpful.

    The phone message states to be pre-recorded (it is not). A foreign voice (mostly likely of Asian background) states to be Jason O'Connor from the ATO calling Tax Evasion. The message threatens that the issue will be dealt with in your local Commowealth courthouse jurisdiction and that Police will be coming to your door, unless you call the number back.

    The caller never mentions your name.

    The caller never mentions your local Commonwealth jurisdiction.

    There is no reference number to relate to an ADP file.

    You can be sure this is a scam!

    Yes, we had the same pre-recorded message on our answering machine when we came home last night. Jason O'Connor, lawsuit filed for tax evasion, will be addressed in your community court, police will be coming to your door. Glad I convinced husband to check the number here before calling back.

    Just got home from work and received the same message from the same person. Lesson from this is that the wife's mobile is on the answering machine and the same knuckle head had rang that 4 times. Jason O'Connor sounds like a busy man.

    Came home from work and found the same message on our answering machine and ignored it too. Even if we thought it was real, it was hard to understand the phone number he gave. We had to listen to it a few times. I've never received a phone call from the ATO, just letters.

    A foreign voice (sounds Indian) claims he is Jason O'Connor (good Indian name) of the ATO asking you to call this number back before a policeman arrives at your door in relation to a commonwealth tax fraud case which will go to court (in your local jusisdiction ?) doesn't even know where I am or where the court case will be???. Oddly, received a similar call about same thing months earlier... Nothings happened then either and there has been no written correspondence... A scam as suspected. Am certain such matters are NOT handled like this.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
