ACT Policing warns the public to beware of second-hand sales scams involving fake payment receipts and cancelled transfers. Learn how to protect yourself.
ACT Policing Issues Warning Over Second-Hand Sales Scams
ACT Policing has issued a fresh warning to Canberrans following a rise in scams targeting people selling second-hand items online. A group of individuals is under investigation for defrauding sellers out of high-value items, such as vehicles, using fake or cancelled payment methods.
While several individuals have already been charged, others remain active and continue to deceive sellers using common online platforms. The scam involves producing fraudulent transfer receipts or reversing electronic payments after the seller has handed over the item.
How the Scam Works
In most cases, scammers contact sellers offering to buy items—sometimes without viewing them in person. They promise to make an electronic transfer and then provide a fake receipt or evidence of payment. However, no funds ever arrive, or the transfer is cancelled shortly after the item changes hands.
This method has led to numerous cases of financial loss, particularly with vehicles and other high-value goods.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
ACT Policing has advised the public to remain vigilant and look for warning signs that could indicate a scam. These include:
- A buyer eager to purchase without viewing the item in person
- The name on the payment not matching the buyer's name
- Insistence on non-instant transfers or delays in payment
- Pressure to complete the transaction quickly
How to Protect Yourself
- Do not hand over goods until payment is verified: Ensure funds have been cleared into your account before releasing any item. Do not rely on screenshots or payment confirmations from the buyer.
- Use instant payment methods: Prefer secure, real-time payment platforms like PayID or Osko to confirm receipt of funds before handing over goods.
- Meet in a public location: Arrange to exchange items in a busy public place. Bring a friend if possible and avoid secluded locations.
- Record buyer details: Ask for identification and take note of vehicle registration or other identifiable information in case of future issues.
ACT Policing continues to investigate the scam group, with further charges expected. Sellers are urged to report suspicious behaviour or payment fraud to police immediately.
