Understanding the 1800 764 751 / 00764751 Scam

The phone number 1800 764 751 has raised significant concern among Australian users, being linked to a series of fraudulent calls impersonating legitimate tech support services. Specifically, callers purporting to be from Windows Support are contacting individuals, claiming they need to address issues related to malware or viruses on their computers. But proceed with caution; this number is part of a well-known scam targeting unsuspecting victims.

How the Scam Operates

  • Callers often introduce themselves with common names like Leesa or Clare Pape, attempting to establish trust. However, they are not associated with Microsoft.
  • Individuals report being asked to access their computers while on the phone, a tactic designed to gain control of personal information or install malicious software.
  • Some reports indicate callers threaten that your machine has unresolved issues, creating a false sense of urgency to prompt compliance.

Why You Should Remain Cautious

As evidenced by multiple user reports from 2015 and 2016, these calls follow a predictable pattern aimed at exploiting technology anxieties. Scams of this nature, commonly referred to as remote access fraud, are designed to trick users into divulging sensitive information. The advice from authorities like SCAMWATCH confirms that legitimate companies like Microsoft will never initiate contact via phone regarding problems with your computer. This is a key indicator that a call from 1800 764 751 / 00764751 should be regarded with suspicion.

Handling Calls from 1800 764 751

  • Do not engage with the caller. Hang up if you suspect fraud.
  • Never provide personal details or access your computer upon request.
  • If you receive a call and are uncertain, hang up and contact Microsoft directly using certified contact details available on their official website.
  • Report any suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities to assist in their investigations.

Yesterday received a call on my Sydney home phone from a caller who said they were from Windows Support, Sydney and were calling to inform me I had problems, perhaps a virus on my computer and could I go into my computer while on the phone for the caller (female called Leesa) to rectify which I declined to do and asked for her number in order to call her back. The number she gave me was 1800764751. I won't be phoning her back as think it is a scam.

Received a call from a number shown as +1 002484 on my mobile. They gave me a call back number 1800 764751 and said that they were from Windows support and that I had problems with my machine. They wanted me to give them details of the error log on my computer. I had not requested assistance from Microsoft. I suspect that this is a fraud to gain access to my details / bank etc.
