Running MS Edge and suddenly the program was interrupted by a message stating there was unauthorised activity on my isp connection and an intermittent alarm sounded on the sound system and Edge was locked. Error code 076-010-080 was stated as the reason and 1300 596 398 was given as the phone to contact. Rang this and refused the offer of help ie login in to my machine to fix it. Ran Avast and Re-Image and both cleared the machine and network. But the attack came through Edge which was locked up and the used Chrome to run virus checks.
My partner clicked on a quiz suggesting that Donald Trumps real IQ would surprise you, and up popped this full screen window purporting to be from Microsoft telling her to call the 1300 596 398 number to get the problem fixed.
I looked up the number on reverseau. Com saw a message suggesting it was a scam. So I went into Task Manager and closed out the page. All seems OK. Thanks guys.
Go to [link] whilst surfing web a large window pops up mimicking Microsoft, a loud alarm sounds, it says your computer has been locked by Microsoft as it is infected with a virus, you are asked to ring 1300596398 a man with an Indian accent answers pretending to be a representative of Micro soft, he attempted to gain remote access to my computer (being computer savvy I did not allow this) as you can see from complaints made to reverse number look up many have fallen into this trap and had their computers locked by this scam and have had to pay money to have their computer unlocked. I rang and spoke to Australian Federal Police, this is an old scam and the scamers phone number changes every 24-48 hours. Microsoft do not contact users whose computers have been infected with a virus.
