Identifying 08 9261 8205: Are You Falling for a Scam?

If you've received a call from 08 9261 8205 / 0892618205, you’re not alone. Many Australians are reporting disturbances from this number. Users have flagged it as a suspicious telemarketer that employs dubious tactics to solicit personal information or payment for non-existent services.

Understanding the Tactics Used

Based on user reports, this number primarily operates by repeatedly asking for someone named "Paul"—a blatant method of trying to extract personal information. If you inform them that no one by that name lives here, they often pivot to inquiring about your own identity, which is an evasive tactic reminiscent of phishing operations.

The Domain Renewal Scam

More alarmingly, this number is linked to calls suggesting that your domain name registration is about to expire. Users have noted that the callers threatened to “send an invoice” if they didn’t secure payment, asserting that failing to act could jeopardise your domain—but many have pointed out that their domains were already on auto-renewal. This pattern shows that the calls are not just unsolicited but potentially a scam designed to harvest payment details.

Best Practices When Receiving Calls from 08 9261 8205

  • Do Not Share Personal Information: Never disclose your name, address, or payment details to unknown callers.
  • Hang Up Immediately: If you feel the call is suspicious, trust your instincts and terminate the conversation.
  • Report the Number: Consider reporting the number to relevant authorities in Australia, like the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
  • Use Reverse Phone Lookup: Tools like Reverseau can help you identify unfamiliar numbers and gain insights into who might be calling you.

In summary, 08 9261 8205 / 0892618205 has been classified as a suspicious telemarketer potentially engaged in a domain renewal scam. If you receive a call from this number or feel uncertain about any unsolicited calls, it is advisable to hang up and report the number. Staying informed and cautious can help safeguard your personal information and finances.

They called me about renewing our domain, which is indeed due in 6 days and is on auto-renewal. They claimed they would send an invoice and that failure to pay it would result in losing the domain. I suggest hanging up on them!

Keeps ringing asking for Paul. Don’t know who “Paul” is. When you say no one by that name here they then ask who you are. Prompting a hangup.
