08 7807 8015 (0878078015): Scam alert - fake PayPal email directing victims to call this number to steal account access and funds.

PayPal Impersonation Scam Using 08 7807 8015

A contributor has identified 08 7807 8015 (also written as 0878078015) as the contact number provided in a sophisticated PayPal phishing email scam. The fraudulent email claims suspicious account activity and instructs recipients to call this South Australian number if they did not authorise a purchase. The scam preys on recipients' urgency and concern about account security - exactly the psychological trigger that makes it effective.

The fake PayPal email references a specific transaction amount ($278.98) at an Apple Store in Massachusetts to create legitimacy. When victims call 0878078015 in response, scammers attempt to gain access to the victim's PayPal account and steal funds directly. This is a classic social engineering attack where the fraudulent phone call is the critical component of the scam chain.

What the Fraudulent Email Claims

The email impersonating PayPal contains several hallmarks of advanced phishing:

  • Fake transaction alert for $278.98 at an overseas Apple Store location
  • False claim about PayPal's "fraud prevention system" logging the activity
  • Instruction to call 08 7807 8015 for "immediate verification and account protection"
  • Use of official-sounding language: "Dear Valued Customer", "Your account safety is our top concern"
  • Artificial urgency suggesting the call must be made "as soon as possible"

The email is designed to bypass spam filters by using legitimate PayPal terminology and phrasing. However, PayPal never requests account verification via unsolicited phone calls, and legitimate PayPal communications do not include phone numbers formatted with the +61 country code prefix in this manner.

Why This Scam Is Dangerous

Once a victim calls 0878078015, the scammer already has significant personal information from the email (the victim's email address, and often their name from account registration). The phone conversation then focuses on extracting additional details like login credentials, security questions, or payment methods. Victims who provide this information may find their PayPal account drained within minutes.

The scammer may also attempt to convince the victim to approve account recovery or reset processes, which hands over complete control of the account. This is particularly serious for victims who use PayPal for business transactions or have linked bank accounts and credit cards to their profile.

What to Do If You Receive This Email

If you receive an email claiming to be from PayPal and directing you to call 08 7807 8015:

  • Do not: Call the number provided, click any links in the email, or reply to the message
  • Do not: Share any personal information, account passwords, or payment details over the phone
  • Do: Delete the email immediately
  • Do: Log in to your PayPal account directly through the official PayPal website (paypal.com) to check your account status
  • Do: Report the email to PayPal's official phishing address: spoof@paypal.com
  • Do: Block the sender's email address in your email client

PayPal's legitimate support team will never call you unsolicited, and they will never ask you to verify your account details over the phone in response to a suspicious activity alert. Any urgent security notification should be investigated by logging into your PayPal account directly, not by calling a number provided in an email.

How to Report This Scam

If you have received this fraudulent PayPal email or have been contacted by someone claiming to represent PayPal at 08 7807 8015:

What happens if I call 0878078015 in response to a PayPal scam email?

If you call 08 7807 8015, scammers will attempt to trick you into revealing your PayPal login credentials, security questions, or payment method details. Once they have this information, they can access your account and steal funds directly. They may also manipulate you into approving account recovery processes that give them complete control.

How do I know if a PayPal email is legitimate?

Legitimate PayPal emails come from addresses ending in @paypal.com and are sent to your account email address. They will never include a phone number to call for account verification. If you receive an email claiming to be from PayPal, log into your PayPal account directly (without clicking any links in the email) to check your account status. Why do scammers use fake PayPal emails instead of calling directly?

Email scams are more efficient because they reach many potential victims at once with minimal cost, and they create a paper trail (the email) that makes victims feel the threat is real and official. The email establishes urgency and context, so when victims call 08 7807 8015, they're already primed to believe they're speaking with PayPal support. By the time the victim realizes it's a scam, the scammers have already accessed their account or stolen their details.
