PayPal Impersonation Reports for 07 2150 9240

A contributor has reported receiving a call from 07 2150 9240 (also written as 0721509240) from someone claiming to represent PayPal Fraud Headquarters. The caller alleged a fraudulent charge of $729.90 had been placed on the recipient's account as a direct debit without authorisation. This report demonstrates a classic impersonation scam combining false urgency with a request for remote computer access.

The caller's behaviour escalated significantly when the contributor refused to provide remote access, eventually becoming verbally aggressive and abusive. This pattern of aggression when targets resist is typical of scammers who rely on coercion rather than legitimate dispute resolution.

What the Caller from 07 2150 9240 Demanded

The scammer who called from 0721509240 made several false claims during the conversation:

  • Claimed to represent PayPal Fraud Headquarters
  • Alleged an unauthorised direct debit of $729.90 on the account
  • Demanded remote access to the contributor's computer to "process the refund"
  • Became aggressively hostile when the contributor refused and repeatedly requested a direct refund instead

The contributor reported that the caller had a strong Indian accent and was difficult to understand. When challenged on why remote access was necessary for a refund, the caller escalated to yelling and profanities rather than providing any legitimate explanation. This refusal to engage with reasonable questions is a strong indicator of fraudulent intent.

Why Remote Access Requests Are a Major Red Flag

PayPal and other legitimate financial institutions never request remote computer access to process refunds. A caller from 07 2150 9240 demanding this access was attempting to trick the contributor into installing malware, stealing banking credentials, or gaining direct access to financial accounts. Once a scammer has remote control of your computer, they can:

  • Install spyware or ransomware
  • Access banking logins and financial accounts
  • Steal personal documents and identity information
  • Transfer funds from linked accounts
  • Lock you out of your own system

The contributor's instinct to refuse was correct. Legitimate refunds never require handing over your computer to a stranger.

Male indian, difficult to understand claimed to be from PayPal Fraud Headquarters.

Said there was a possibility of a fraud charge on my account for $729 and 90 odd cents.

I acted all concerned and said “oh no! I definitely didn’t purchase anything for that amount”

He said “it’s set up as a direct debit”

I said “I didn’t authorise that - can you please cancel and refund it”

He said “I need remote access to your computer and will complete the refund”

I said “I am not in front of my computer and am out, so I give you full authorisation to give me the $729 - don’t even worry about the cents”

He said “no it doesn’t work like that”

I said “well you have my details, I give you permission to refund me”

He yelled “I told you it doesn’t work like that!”

I continued to tell him to just refund me until he got extremely aggressive and the yelling and profanities got rather colourful.

I then just hung up and blocked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would PayPal ask for remote computer access to process a refund?

They wouldn't. Legitimate PayPal refunds are processed through their secure system without any need for remote access to your computer. The caller from 07 2150 9240 was attempting to gain access to steal banking credentials, install malware, or lock you out of your system. Always hang up if anyone claiming to be from a financial institution asks for remote access to your computer.

How did the scammer from 0721509240 know to claim PayPal specifically?

Scammers call thousands of numbers daily using generic impersonation tactics. PayPal is one of the world's largest payment platforms, so claiming to be from PayPal Fraud Headquarters gives the call false credibility. The scammer from 07 2150 9240 was likely using a mass-calling approach rather than targeting this specific contributor.

What should I do if I've already given remote access to someone claiming to be from PayPal?

Disconnect your computer from the internet immediately and take it offline. Change all passwords (PayPal, email, banking) from a different device using a secure connection. Contact your bank and PayPal to report the breach and monitor accounts for unauthorised transactions. You can also report this to the Australian Cyber Security Centre at cyber.gov.au and Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au.

Is 07 2150 9240 definitely a scam number or could it be legitimately spoofed?

The report from a contributor who spoke directly with a scammer claiming to be from PayPal indicates this number (0721509240) has been used for fraudulent impersonation calls. However, scammers often spoof or mask their real numbers, so the actual origin of the call may not be 07 2150 9240. Regardless of the displayed number, never trust unsolicited calls about account fraud or refunds - always verify independently using official contact details.

What should I do if someone from 07 2150 9240 calls asking about an unauthorised charge?

Hang up immediately. Do not engage with any requests for payment, remote access, or personal information. If you're concerned about your PayPal account, log in directly through the official PayPal website or call PayPal on the number listed on their website - never use a number provided by the caller. Report the call to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au.

Can I get my money back if a scammer from 0721509240 successfully accessed my computer?

Contact your bank and PayPal immediately to report the unauthorised access and any fraudulent transactions. They may be able to reverse charges or dispute transactions within certain timeframes. You should also report the incident to the Australian Cyber Security Centre at cyber.gov.au and Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au. Document all details of the scam attempt, including the date, time, and what information may have been compromised.
