Understanding the Calls from 0498 663 402

The phone number 0498 663 402 / 0498663402 has recently gained attention due to multiple user reports categorising it as a scam. Callers from this number appear to use deceptive tactics, claiming that victims' internet lines are being hacked. This type of behaviour raises red flags for several reasons, as summarised from user experiences.

Analysis of Reports

One troubling report dated 28 March 2022 indicates that the caller rang multiple times, leading to frustration for those on the receiving end. Upon finally connecting, the user observed a long delay, suggesting potential call spoofing or unreliable telephony systems commonly associated with scam operations. The caller’s audibility was hampered by background noise, a typical feature of unsolicited calls made by telemarketers or scammers, as they attempt to seem credible while actually operating from dubious locations.

Moreover, once the user asked the operator to cease calls, the operator's mimicking responses showcased a lack of professionalism and further indicated untrustworthy intentions. This type of behaviour is often employed by scammers to provoke annoyance and disarm the victim's instinctual safeguard against such dubious callers.

The Type of Scam

The primary tactic used by the individual or organisation behind this number is known as the “phishing scam”. Scammers typically endeavour to frighten recipients into believing there’s an imminent danger, such as the hacking of their internet line, which in turn is designed to coerce them into providing personal information. This could lead to identity theft or financial fraud if the information is revealed.

What to Do if You Receive a Call from This Number

  • Do not provide personal information: Refrain from sharing any details that could be exploited by fraudsters, such as your address, financial details, or any identifiers.
  • Hang up: If the conversation appears suspicious, a prudent action is to simply hang up. You are not obligated to continue a conversation with an untrustworthy caller.
  • Report the number: Consider reporting the number to authorities or platforms like Reverseau, where details concerning scams can be shared with the community for awareness.
  • Block the number: Most mobile devices allow you to block intrusive numbers, preventing any further unsolicited calls from this individual.

In summary, 0498 663 402 / 0498663402 is a straight-forward case of a scam operation, primarily employing high-pressure tactics to mislead and manipulate unsuspecting callers. The caller rang multiple times, and it took a long time for the call to connect. There was a lot of background noise, and when the user asked the operator to stop calling, the operator began to mimic their words. The caller claimed that the user's internet line was being hacked, which the user dismissed as nonsense. This appears to be a clear scam, unless Telstra's customer service has deteriorated drastically.
