Understanding the Threat of 0489 986 033
The phone number 0489 986 033 has recently circulated as a prominent scam attempt, primarily posing as legitimate contact from NAB (National Australia Bank). Based on multiple user reports, it has become evident that this number is designed to deceive individuals into revealing personal banking information.
The Scam Details
Users have reported receiving messages that falsely informed them of new debit cards being shipped or requesting verification of personal details such as their full name or past address. The scams typically involve:
- An unsolicited message that closely imitates NAB's communication style.
- References to credit cards or recent banking activity that the recipient has no knowledge of.
- The alarming accuracy of personal details, leading many to believe the messages may be legitimate.
One common example involves alerts about a debit card arriving shortly, urging recipients to set up their digital wallets in anticipation. This tactic not only encourages panic but also lures victims into complacency about responding to such communications.
Why Users Should be Concerned
What’s particularly unsettling is how this number has been able to use identifiable details, prompting recipients to question their security, especially those who have had no previous relationship with NAB. Reviews indicate a pattern whereby victims express frustration and fear, stating that even if they’ve never banked with NAB, they received detailed messages that included old addresses or names.

I initially thought this number might be sketchy since I got a text from NAB about a debit card replacement—it had my personal info, and I freaked out a bit. But to my surprise, a new card actually came in the mail, so I guess it's the real deal!
This number texted me out of the blue, pretending to be legit, even using my name and bits of my bank info! Claiming they’re sending a new debit card because mine is 'expiring.' Give me a break—it's 100% a scam! Found more details on it elsewhere too!
How, after 12 months is this number still in operation when Government stated that they were all about eliminating scammers. Why isn't there a GOVERNMENT site that advocates for ALL the people affected.
I received the same message purportedly from NAB, but I am not their customer, and my name is not Fiona. Therefore, I strongly believe this is a scam.
I received a phone call from this number around 8:35 AM, but I'm unsure about the caller's identity or purpose.
Scam call, claiming to be NBA & asking for a payment before your card arrives. Banks don't do this.
If you are ever unsure just phone your nearest branch yourself and don't respond to text messages or anyone calling you from a bank. Just say you will contact your branch the next day.
I received a text from this number today that addressed me as "Cameron." I keep getting these messages repeatedly with the same name. I am unsure if they have mistakenly dialed the wrong number or what the situation is.
I received a message from this number on Friday claiming that my NAB card is being mailed out because it has expired. I'm unsure if this is a scam or legitimate.

Scam trying to be NAB.
Got a message from 0489 986 033 saying my NAB visa debit card has been mailed. Sure enough the card arrived a few days later, so the sms was from NAB. Given the prevalence of sms scams, I think it's a bit sloppy of NAB to be using smss to communicate this sort of information.
