    Received after 6 pm Thursday 28th April. When I answered a guy said he was calling on behalf of a cancer charity, looking for donations. I didn’t quite hear the organisation name.

    When I asked him “I’m sorry where are from?”, he chuckled a little and said he was calling from Sydney and confirmed that he had a New Zealander accent. I believe him on both counts, but he completely misunderstood my question. He sounded quite nervous. I politely told him I was not interested. He said he understood, especially as he was calling out of the blue. He asked if maybe I would be open to him sending me some more information in the mail, which would give me more time to consider a donation. I again politely declined. He understood and thanked me for my time.

    Not sure what to make of this one. I’m still not sure what cancer charity this was for. I swear he said two different organisations. Not sure.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
