The Nature of the Scam

Reports indicate that individuals claiming to represent Telstra have been contacting unsuspecting customers, alleging serious issues linked to their internet services. These tactics serve a dual purpose; primarily, they aim to frighten the victim into compliance and, ultimately, access their systems or personal information under the guise of support.

Why Should You be Concerned?

The feedback from users consistently indicates that these calls exhibit significant red flags:

  • Claim of Authority: The callers often invoke the name of Telstra and the Australian Department of Cyber Security, misleading people into thinking they are legitimate.
  • Request for Immediate Action: Many reports detail pushing the recipient to provide personal details or rush to their computers, which is a common tactic in scams.
  • Inconsistent Information: Many callers appear poorly trained, stumbling over scripts and unable to deliver coherent responses, reinforcing the impression of a scam.

I received a call from 0488521504 - claiming to call from Telstra because someone on my internet line was downloading suspicious materials.

She asked me to go to my computer to secure my internet line.... Firstly I'm not with Telstra so I said to her how do I know who you are and she said The Australian Department of Cyber Security requested that they do these calls - when I said ok I'll give the department a call.... She hung up..... Obviously a scam and sadly I need to advise the called was a female Indian caller. - Most likely from a call centre overseas.

Got a call from this number claiming to be Telstra and asking about my Telstra internet. I don't have Telstra internet.

They kept going on about how to have internet I have to have Telstra and kept asking,"Do you have internet?".

I told them that I have no accounts with Telstra and therefore they needed to provide me with details of who is calling and why. They hung up.

The number is now blocked on my phone.

The gentleman (I use the term advisedly) said he was calling me from Telstra about my internet usage. He then went on to ask if I was aware that my internet access was being used for a money-laundering process. I asked him how would I know that? He said he would be able to show me - meaning of course, that he would have asked me to give him access to my computer. I told him very politely that I thought his call was a scam and then hung up. The fact that he was also stumbling over his 'script' was a bit of a give-away as well.
