Callback Lure Reports for 0485 858 316
One contributor has flagged 0485 858 316 (also written as 0485858316) as a suspicious callback lure attempt. This type of scam relies on the victim returning the call, often to a premium-rate number or a scammer's line that then harvests personal information or charges unexpected fees.
The report indicates the caller using 0485 858 316 employed a deliberate pattern: allowing the phone to ring exactly three times before disconnecting without leaving a voicemail. This specific behaviour is a classic callback lure tactic, designed to trigger curiosity and prompt the recipient to dial back the number.
What Makes This Call Suspicious
The contributor who received the call from 0485 858 316 noted that the Pivotel satellite service provider is unusual for standard consumer spam, making this pattern particularly noteworthy. The refusal to leave any message, combined with the precise three-ring pattern, suggests deliberate strategy rather than accidental disconnection.
Callback lures work because they exploit natural human curiosity about missed calls. The scammer's goal is simple: get you to call back 0485858316 so they can either charge you through premium-rate schemes, capture your voice for authentication fraud, or initiate a conversation that leads to further manipulation.
What to Do If You Receive a Call from 0485 858 316
If 0485 858 316 calls you:
- Do not: Return the call, even if curious about who called. Do not leave a voicemail response asking them to call back.
- Do: Block the number immediately on your phone. Let it ring out to voicemail, and do not listen to any messages if left.
- Do: If the number calls repeatedly, report it to ACMA and add it to your phone's blocked list.
The cardinal rule with callback lures is simple: if you do not recognise the number and there is no voicemail, do not call back. Legitimate callers always leave a message explaining why they called.

What is a callback lure scam?
A callback lure scam relies on callers (using numbers like 0485 858 316) deliberately hanging up or letting the phone ring a few times without leaving a message. The scammer hopes you will call back out of curiosity. Once you dial 0485858316, they may charge you premium rates, attempt voice authentication fraud, or trick you into revealing personal information during conversation. The three-ring pattern reported for this number is textbook callback lure behaviour.
Why did the caller from 0485 858 316 not leave a voicemail?
Callback lure scammers deliberately avoid leaving messages because voicemails would either expose their scam or give you a reason not to call back. By leaving the phone silent and letting it ring 0485858316 times without explanation, they rely entirely on your curiosity to trigger a return call. This is the mechanism of the scam.
Is it safe to call back 0485 858 316?
No. Do not call back 0485 858 316 or 0485858316 if you do not recognise the number and no voicemail was left. Calling back a callback lure number exposes you to premium charges, social engineering, or voice authentication attacks. Legitimate callers always leave a message.
Why is Pivotel mentioned in the report for 0485 858 316?
Pivotel is a satellite communication provider, which is unusual for typical spam numbers. The contributor noted that 0485 858 316 appears to be using Pivotel's service, which may indicate either a compromised account or deliberate use of a less-monitored provider to avoid detection. This makes the callback lure more suspicious.
Should I block 0485 858 316 permanently?
Yes. Block 0485858316 on your phone immediately. There is no legitimate reason for a caller to ring three times without leaving a message. Blocking prevents future calls and removes any temptation to call back out of curiosity. Most modern phones allow you to block numbers directly in your call history.
What should I do if 0485 858 316 calls me multiple times?
If 0485 858 316 or 0485858316 continues to call repeatedly, report it to ACMA at acma.gov.au and Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au with details of each call (date, time, how many rings). Also report the number on Reverseau to contribute to community awareness. Do not engage with the caller or return any calls.
