Early last evening (03/11/2022) an unsuccessful scam was attempted on WhatsApp using the number +61 485 839 339.
It was the "Hi Mum" scam with my daughter advising she had broken her phone that would take two weeks to repair and to please change my contact for her at the aforementioned number. I duly complied with her request.
Subsequently my so-called daughter asked for cover of two payments of AUD4990 as, although she had funds in her account, it had been frozen for 48 hours due to a change of device. At this stage I became suspicious.
I requested invoices to substantiate this payment. The sender then sent a name - B Sibanda - and an account number that I know was a CBA BSB but unfortunately did not take a screen shot.
I was tired and advised I would deal with the issue in the morning. I received an immediate response requesting the transfer be done ASAP. I pointed out that it was past the hour of past shut off time for banking.
I repeated my requirement for invoices to which they responded that the amounts were for online purchases.
I gave up, switched my phone on silent and finally went to bed after 2 hours plus of this communication.
This morning I awoke to find all the sender's messages on WhatsApp had been deleted!
