The phone number 0484 955 990 / 0484955990 has raised significant concern among users in Australia, with reports characterising it as a phishing scam. The caller claims to represent the National Broadband Network (NBN) security department, creating a sense of urgency and fear to manipulate individuals.

According to multiple user reviews, the individual behind this number presents themselves with an Indian accent and appears to be using various phone numbers to maintain anonymity while executing their nefarious schemes. In one particular instance, a user recounted a startling encounter where the caller, identifying himself as "Alex," alarmingly shared that the user’s details had been compromised and used in the United States. This common tactic is designed to prey on the unsuspecting, instilling fear that their broadband connection would be suspended unless immediate action was taken.

This type of scam, often referred to as a tech support scam, usually involves misleading communications with fraudulent promises or threats that aim to extract sensitive personal information. The layers of deception orchestrated by such callers can often leave victims confused and anxious, resulting in them revealing confidential data that can lead to identity theft or financial loss.

To safeguard against this and similar scams, consider the following precautions:

  • Do not engage: If you receive a call from this number, avoid providing any personal information.
  • Hang up: Terminate the call immediately, especially if anything sounds suspicious or overly alarming.
  • Verify independently: Contact the legitimate NBN customer service directly through official channels if you suspect any issues with your service.
  • Report the scam: Consider reporting the incident to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or local authorities.

By remaining vigilant and informed, you will be well-prepared to handle potentially dangerous calls. Utilising resources like Reverseau or a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia can further help decipher unknown calls and protect your personal information from unwanted scrutiny.

This was a caller with indian accent who used a different mobile number than two hours ago (0417 335 054) saying that he was calling from National Broadband Network security department and that he had to talk to me about all my details being used in the US. The caller (Alex) before said that he would give me a password number to discuss this matter in three hours. Also this person said that my National Broadband Network connection would be cancelled if I wouldn't agree to get back in touch..
