Individuals who received calls from this number reported receiving automated messages claiming there was an unauthorised withdrawal of $1,800 from their bank accounts. This tactic is commonly referred to as a “vishing” scam, where scammers use voice technology to deceive individuals into divulging personal information.

Spoofing Undercover

Upon calling the number back, one user discovered that it was answered by a government employee based in Queensland, who confirmed that she had not made any such calls. This revelation highlights a prevalent tactic among scammers: caller ID spoofing. This technique enables malicious individuals to display a legitimate or trustworthy number on caller ID, misleading the recipient and prompting them to respond.

What Makes This a Scam?

  • Automated Messages: Scammers often utilise automated systems to convey urgency and panic, pushing individuals to act quickly without thinking.
  • Imitating Trusted Organisations: By pretending to be from Commonwealth Bank, the scammers play on the trust customers have in their bank. It’s a psychological manipulation tactic to steal sensitive information.
  • Response Request: The ask to push “1” to confirm a transaction is a common ploy to confirm if you’re a live target, enabling further attempts to extract personal details.

Automated message advised that it was the commonwealth bank wanting to confirm an $1,800 withdrawal from my account, asked me to push 1 if I confirmed.

I called the phone back and it was answered by a government worker in QLD who said that she hadnt called me. She will advise her IT department of the spoof.
