If you've received a call or message from 0482 094 563 / 0482094563, it's essential to be cautious. This number has been linked to a prevalent scam known as the "Hey Mum" scam. This scam often targets unsuspecting parents, posing as their child in dire need of financial assistance. By understanding the tactics used by scammers, you can protect yourself and your loved ones.
What is the “Hey Mum” Scam?
The "Hey Mum" scam involves the caller impersonating your child, suggesting that they've lost their phone and are contacting you from a temporary number. Users have reported messages that misleadingly state something of dire urgency, such as needing money to clear a credit card debt. This emotional angle is designed to bypass your scepticism and prompt an immediate reaction—usually a financial one.
How the Scam Operates
According to user reports, the scam typically begins with a text message that addresses the recipient as "Mum," stating something like, "I have lost my phone. This is my new number." This creates an illusion of legitimacy, as many parents might panic thinking something has really happened to their child.
In recent reports, individuals were requested to transfer substantial amounts of money directly to a specific bank account—in this case, a Citibank account. Victims have mentioned figures as high as $2,400, indicating significant financial loss associated with this type of fraudulent activity.
Dealing with Suspicious Calls
If you receive communication from 0482 094 563 / 0482094563 or a similar number, do not engage with the caller or respond via text. Here are key steps to consider:
- Verify the Caller: Reach out to your child through their known contacts before proceeding. This simple check can save you from falling victim to the scam.
- Do Not Send Money: Always avoid transferring funds to unknown accounts, especially based on emotional pleas from unexpected sources.
- Report the Scam: Inform local authorities or use resources available through Reverseau to report and share your experience.
- Block the Number: To prevent any future contact, it’s advisable to block the number from your phone.

This number was used on 6 October as part of a scam. The first step in the scam involved a text to "Mum" saying "I have lost my phone. This is my temporary number", and the "sting" was the transfer of $2.100 to a Citibank account to pay the fake child's credit card debt.
This number was used in a text message addressing me as Mum and claiming to have dropped their phone in the toilet (which would be very on brand for my daughter). Seems to be a scam.
