    Received 2 phone calls in quick succession to say that a note was left on their windscreen with my mobile number saying that I had backed into her car. Informed her it was not possible as I haven't been home and that she had the wrong number. She said that she was going to take this to her insurer and she would get a new car out of me. Told her she was joking and hung up.

    Called me about 3 times. When I answered they said they were a neighbour and complained about my dog barking in the night. They said they had signatures from other neighbours and asked if they could drop it off in my postbox. I started to question how they got my number and they started laughing and it turned weird sounding. An automated voice came and said “a friend of yours has pranked called you”. Very strange.

    Telephone scammers try to steal your money or personal information. Scams may come through phone calls from real people, robocalls, or text messages.

    Call or message may be a scam if:

    • You're asked for personal information or money;
    • Text messages tell you to urgently click a link or call a number;
    • The call or text pretends to be from someone you trust like your phone company or bank;
    • You're being threatened or made to feel scared;
    • The caller wants to access and control your computer.

    To protect yourself:

    • Don't answer if you don't know who it is. Let the call go to voicemail.
    • If a caller leaves a message claiming to be from known organisation, cross check the number the call came from against the organisation's official website.
    • Never share any personal information about yourself or your bank details.
    • Don't click on any links. Never let a stranger take control of your computer.
    • Do not send any money.
    • Block calls on your mobile phone. Your phone company can tell you how to block calls to your home phone.
