0480882826 called me and the caller spoke Mandarin. He addressed me very casually as “sister”.

When I asked who he was, he said his name was Kevin.

I asked which Kevin he was, and he claimed he was from Melbourne and that we had spoken in January. I have never had any friend or contact in Melbourne with that name.

He then said he wanted to come to Sydney to meet me. I told him I am not in Sydney.

He asked whether my mobile number is linked to my WeChat account. I told him no, and that I do not know him at all.

The whole conversation was suspicious and did not match any real contact I have.

I believe this call was a scam.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would a caller from 0480 882 826 ask about my WeChat account?

The caller from 0480882826 was likely attempting to establish a secondary communication channel outside standard phone calls. This is common in romance and investment scams targeting Chinese-speaking communities, as it allows scammers to build a false relationship and eventually solicit money or personal information through a platform where conversation histories are easier to manipulate or delete. The question about linking your mobile number to WeChat is a red flag for coordinated scam activity.

Is 0480 882 826 definitely a scam number?

Based on one verified community report, 0480882826 shows clear impersonation tactics consistent with romance scams. The caller claimed a false identity, invented a backstory about prior contact, used casual rapport-building language, and attempted to arrange meetings while enquiring about social media accounts. However, we recommend treating any call from 0480 882 826 with caution and verifying the caller's identity independently before sharing any information.

What should I do if someone calls from 0480882826 claiming to know me from Melbourne?

Hang up immediately and do not engage. If you have doubts, independently contact someone in Melbourne you actually know and ask them to confirm whether they know a person by that name. Do not rely on information the caller provides about themselves. If the call from 0480 882 826 repeats, block the number and report it to Scamwatch at scamwatch.gov.au.

Can a satellite provider like Pivotel be used for legitimate calls?

Yes, Pivotel provides legitimate satellite phone services used by people in remote areas and for business purposes. However, scammers can spoof or obtain numbers from any provider, including satellite networks. The legitimacy of 0480882826 as a provider does not guarantee legitimate use of the specific number. The impersonation tactics and suspicious behaviour reported are what indicate potential scam activity, not the provider itself.

Why would a scammer call me at 3 AM from 0480 882 826?

Callers from 0480882826 may have deliberately chosen an unusual time to catch you off-guard or less critical in your assessment of the call. Early morning or late night calls can make people groggy and more likely to engage without questioning the caller's story thoroughly. Romance scammers in particular may be operating across time zones or deliberately testing when you are home and available to talk.

If I already told 0480 882 826 my mobile number during the call, should I be worried?

Your mobile number being known to the caller from 0480882826 is not immediately dangerous on its own, as your number may already be in circulation. However, if you provided other personal information such as your address, workplace, banking details, or confirmed which social media accounts you use, take steps to secure those accounts. Change passwords, monitor your bank accounts, and consider reporting the call to scamwatch.gov.au and your bank's fraud team.
