Users have been receiving SMS messages claiming to come from Medicare, alarmingly notifying them that their personal Medicare information is about to expire. This tactic is designed to instil fear and prompt individuals to click on a malicious link to "update" their information.

Understanding the Scam

This type of scam, commonly known as a phishing attempt, exploits the authority of recognised institutions like Medicare. Phishing scams typically aim to glean sensitive information, such as your Medicare number, date of birth, and even banking details by creating a sense of urgency. With a mobile number as the contact method, perpetuators aim to look more legitimate, but legitimate government agencies such as Medicare typically do not send important notifications via SMS from unverified phone numbers.

Handling Suspicious Communications

Receiving a message from 0480 799 121 / 0480799121 or similar numbers can be alarming. Here are some steps you can take if you find yourself in a similar situation:

  • Do Not Click Links: If there's a link in the message that asks you to update personal information, refrain from clicking it. This is often a direct route to scams designed to compromise your information.
  • Verify the Source: Contact Medicare directly through official channels; do not reply to the number or use provided links.
  • Report the Scam: Keeping Australia safe involves reporting suspicious communications. Alert relevant authorities to help combat these scams.
  • Block the Number: To prevent future mishaps, take action to block the number on your phone.

Conclusion

In the realm of phone interactions, it's imperative to stay vigilant against fraud like that represented by 0480 799 121 / 0480799121. As with any suspicious communication, using a service like Reverseau or performing a Reverse Phone Lookup Australia can assist in identifying problematic numbers and protecting your personal information. Received an SMS from this number claiming that my personal Medicare information will expire soon and provided a link to click on to update it. No doubt this is a scam. Number blocked. Why would Medicare contact you from a mobile number? You know that you are being manipulated when a message tries to use fear - of your medicare account not working - to coerce you.
