Beware of 0480 516 682, a number reported as sending suspicious SMS messages about overdue toll charges. Learn how to handle calls from this number.

In an age where digital scams are becoming increasingly commonplace, it is crucial to stay informed about suspicious phone numbers. One such number, 0480 516 682, has gained attention due to user reports categorizing it as a suspicious SMS scam.

Recent reviews highlight a particular incident reported on 27 November 2023, where a user received an SMS at an unusually late hour, claiming that their toll charges were overdue. The following standout characteristics have led to the classification of this number as a scam:

  • Misleading Information: The message did not identify the sender or provide context, which raises immediate red flags for any recipient. Legitimate businesses typically disclose their identity in communications.
  • Unexpected Relevance: The claim about overdue toll charges from Linkt—a service operating primarily in Melbourne—was particularly suspicious for the user residing on the opposite side of Australia. This highlights the likelihood of a scam targeting individuals unrelated to the service.
  • Suspicious Links: The SMS included a link (bitly) directing recipients to what appeared to be a fake Linkt website, further confirming the risky nature of the communication. Users should always exercise caution when clicking on links from unknown sources.

Considering these factors, it is evident that 0480 516 682 should be treated as a threat rather than a legitimate contact. If you receive a message or call from this number, it is advisable to:

  • Do Not Engage: Avoid responding to messages or calls from this number.
  • Report the Number: Use tools like Reverseau or Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to report this number and safeguard others from potential scams.
  • Protect Your Information: Never provide personal or financial details in response to unsolicited messages.

Staying vigilant about suspicious phone communications is essential in our digital age. Always trust your instincts, and if something feels off, it's best to err on the side of caution. Utilize resources like Reverseau to stay informed and alert to who might be trying to reach you.

Sent me an SMS (At 3 in the morning!) claiming my Toll Charges are overdue. And to follow a bitly link to complete ASAP.

The SMS does not explain who they are or what they want.

The bitly link leads to a fake Linkt website. It makes no sense that I would be getting messages from Linkt (Which deals with Melbourne Toll Roads) when I live on the other side of the continent!
