This number is associated with an attempt to extract personal information under the pretext of offering discounts.

What Users Are Reporting

Based on multiple reviews, the primary concern involves calls where the scammers impersonate representatives from Optus. They often offer enticing deals, such as a “30% discount” on your bill, and request personal details including verification codes that are sent to your mobile. However, these are tactics aimed at gaining access to your sensitive information.

  • Optimal Spoofing Techniques: Scammers leverage number spoofing to gain trust, making it appear as though they are calling from a legitimate number—often one that actually belongs to an official entity, like the New South Wales Police Association.

Identifying the Scam

This particular phone number does not represent a legitimate business. Instead, it is a channel for scammers who aim to exploit unsuspecting individuals. If the caller denies to provide verification through official channels or gets offended when you refuse to share personal details, it's a red flag.

Claimed that they’re from door dash they sent an email absolutely looks legit but when I ask them to verify themselves through the merchant portal they’ve terminated the call. Very professional scammers I normally even don’t go that far in the conversation to reckon that it’s a fraudulent activity.

Terrible humans.

I received a call from someone claiming to be from OPTUS, attempting to activate a refund. They sent a code to my phone and asked for my date of birth. I refused to provide this information over the phone, and the caller immediately terminated the call. Upon researching the number, I found that it is associated with the Police Association.

0480 027 220 number is being used for spoofing (scammers duplicate the number so appear to be calling from a legitimate number). In this case, when you call the number back, it is the New South Wales Police Association (in Australia).

This spoofing is linked to another spoofed number, the 'Optus' messaging scam, where a code is sent to your mobile appearing in your previous/legitimate Optus message thread. Not long after the sms is received a scammer calls, using a spoofed mobile number (like the one here), to offer a 30% discount off your Optus bill, as a loyal customer, and asks you to read them the code they sent you. I suspect this is in order to gain your trust or confidence that they are legit in some way?! I usually hang up so not sure what other personal details they phish for beyond this.

Me again, when you ring the number back, it is actually N.S. W police services Australia. The scammers have duplicated or called from that number.

'Optus' scam call. Lady offers 30% discount.

They ask you to stay on the phone. Then say they will send a code. Asked me to confirm my details. I gave them the wrong details.

They should have an idea that those details were incorrect.

Also, the number comes up as potential fraud. A standard Australian mobile number. States they are from a department of Optus.

Optus doesn't take time out of their day to call everyone to offer discounts.

Best to avoid this number: 0480027220.
