The phone number 0466 858 045 has raised alarm among users, with numerous reports describing suspicious text messages that seek to exploit familial trust. Classified as a scam, this number primarily targets unsuspecting individuals by masquerading as a call from a family member in distress.
Many users have reported receiving messages stating that the sender's "old phone has water damage" and desperately asking for a WhatsApp reply. This modus operandi reflects a common scam trend where fraudsters aim to create a false sense of urgency to elicit a response. Similar messages received by multiple recipients suggest that the sender does not possess any legitimate connection, leading to the conclusion that this is a fraudulent scheme.
This scam is particularly troubling because it plays on emotions—targeting recipients who may be more inclined to respond to messages from 'loved ones'. If you receive a text from 0466 858 045, it is essential to keep in mind the following points:
- Do not respond: Engaging with the sender may lead to continued harassment.
- Verify independently: If you believe the message could be from a family member, verify by contacting them directly using a known number.
- Report the number: Such scams should be reported to your telecommunications provider and to authorities like the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission via Scamwatch.
In summary, 0466 858 045 is a number associated with scam attempts, seeking to mislead individuals into thinking they are hearing from someone close. Received sms on 31 August 2023 from disgusting person saying ‘My old phone has water damage. Can you call me on this new number Mum’. I have verified this is not from my family.
I received a text message stating that my phone had water damage and instructed me to reply to the number. I would like to clarify that I am not anyone's mother. This appears to be a spam scam.
I received a message that said, "Hi Mum... please WhatsApp me on my new number. My old phone got water damaged." This makes me question whether this could be a scam.
I received a text message stating, "Water damage has messed up my old phone. This is my new phone number, Mum. Could you WhatsApp me back if you received this message?" This seems sketchy, and I encourage anyone who receives similar messages to report them, hoping that Telstra, Optus, and other telecommunications companies take action against such messages.
