NAB Impersonation Scams and Legitimate Fraud Alerts from 04 3835 7801

04 3835 7801 (also written as 0438357801) presents a complex picture. Eight contributors confirm receiving legitimate fraud detection messages from NAB on this number, while four separate reports flag it as a scam number impersonating NAB. The key distinction: some callers and texts genuinely represent NAB detecting fraudulent transactions, whilst others are scammers pretending to be NAB.

The impersonation risk is significant. Three contributors specifically reported that 0438357801 sent messages claiming to be from NAB but the number itself is not authentic NAB contact details. One report states bluntly: "This is a scam phone number, it is not a legitimate NAB phone number. Do not return their texts or calls." Another contributor received a suspicious SMS at 11:48 PM on February 19 claiming a $237.07 withdrawal was blocked, but checking their account showed no such transaction and an unexpectedly high balance instead.

In contrast, multiple contributors have verified through independent action that legitimate NAB fraud alerts do use this number. One detailed report describes receiving a 5 AM text about a $0.00 transaction, replying, getting an automated response, then receiving a follow-up call from a Melbourne number where NAB staff confirmed specific transaction details without requesting passwords or login credentials. This contributor later received an official fraud case email from NAB (No-reply-fraud@nab.com.au) confirming the process.

What Callers and Messages from 04 3835 7801 Claim

Legitimate messages from 04 3835 7801 describe detected fraudulent or suspicious card activity. Contributors report receiving texts saying their card has been blocked due to unusual transactions, often with specific amounts mentioned. One contributor received an alert about a suspicious $0.00 transaction paired with legitimate pending transactions. NAB's follow-up calls verify transaction details by listing previous legitimate transactions and asking which ones the cardholder recognises.

Scam messages impersonating NAB also mention card blocking and transaction amounts. One report describes a message claiming a card was blocked and asking the recipient to "reply with 1." Another late-night message (11:48 PM) claimed a specific withdrawal was blocked but the account showed no matching transaction. The scammers use the same urgent tone as legitimate fraud alerts, making distinction difficult without verification.

Legitimate NAB staff on follow-up calls do not request passwords, PINs, or login credentials. They confirm your address, discuss specific transaction history visible in your account, and explain the fraud resolution process. Scammers, by contrast, may ask you to reply to texts or provide personal information.

Report Patterns and Timing

Reports span from February 2023 to December 2025, showing ongoing activity. Timing varies: some legitimate alerts arrived at 5 AM, whilst one scam impersonation came at 11:48 PM. This suggests scammers deliberately send messages outside business hours when verification is harder.

The SMS channel dominates the reports, with some follow-up calls. Multiple contributors note they independently verified by calling NAB directly using the number on their card, which is the gold standard for confirmation. One contributor who received a late-night suspicious message said they were "pretty convinced it's a scam" and found "no ties to NAB," yet others with similar-looking messages confirmed legitimacy by calling NAB directly.

A Telstra mobile number, 04 3835 7801 appears to be used both legitimately by NAB and spoofed by scammers, complicating identification. The 4 suspicious/scam reports represent one-third of all reports, indicating real impersonation risk despite legitimate use.

What to Do If You Receive a Call or SMS from 04 3835 7801

If you receive a message from 04 3835 7801 or 0438357801 claiming card fraud:

  • Do not: Reply to the text, click any links, or call the number in the message
  • Do not: Provide passwords, PINs, card details, or login credentials to anyone who contacts you
  • Do: Hang up or ignore the message immediately
  • Do: Use the official NAB number on the back of your card or their website to verify the claim
  • Do: Check your account directly through the official NAB app or website for any fraudulent activity
  • Do: Block the number if you receive multiple suspicious messages

If NAB has genuinely detected fraud on your account, calling NAB's official number will confirm it. Legitimate NAB staff will discuss specific transaction details but never ask for sensitive credentials. If you call NAB and they have no record of contact from 04 3835 7801, the message was a scam.

It's legit. NAB.

I had an automated text from this number at 5 am about my card being blocked due to a $0.00 transaction (there indeed was a sus $0.00 transaction)

Gave it a reply the next arvo and then got an automated reply saying they'll call soon to duscuss the next steps.

Got a call 5 mins later from a number in melb and I thought it was a scam or phishing attempt, there was a stereotypical heavily accented indian guy.

But he knew the transaction details for (legit) things I didn't say, he never asked for a password, pin, or to log in to anything.

Just confirmed if the sus transaction was from me or not, I said it wasn't, then he listed off the last few transactions (they matched the ones listed in my transactions) and then asked what the last legit one was. Confirmed the amount. Then after confirming that it was fraudulant, said NAB will block the card, cancel the pending fraud transactions and send a new card to my address (he knew it) and that was it.

Got an email from NAB (No-reply-fraud@nab.com.au) shortly after saying that they're going ahead with the fraud case with a pdf of the fraud transactions they're looking into and that I don't need to do anything further.

If still in doubt though, actually call NAB directly with the number they list if you get a message.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 04 3835 7801 a real NAB number?

It's complicated. Eight contributors confirm receiving legitimate NAB fraud alerts on 04 3835 7801, whilst four reports flag it as a scam impersonating NAB. The safest approach: never trust any unsolicited message or call from 0438357801. Instead, independently call NAB using the official number on your card to verify. NAB has confirmed that scammers do impersonate this number, so legitimate NAB contact should be verified through official channels only.

What should I do if 0438357801 sends me a message about my card being blocked?

Do not reply to the message or click any links. Immediately hang up the phone. Then call NAB directly using the number on the back of your card or their official website. Tell them you received a message from 04 3835 7801 and ask if NAB attempted to contact you about fraud. If NAB confirms they did, ask them to verify the specific transaction. If NAB has no record of contact from 0438357801, the message was a scam and you should block the number.

Why do some people say 04 3835 7801 is legitimate while others call it a scam?

Because both are true. Legitimate NAB fraud alerts have been sent from 04 3835 7801, and contributors have verified these independently by calling NAB directly. However, scammers also impersonate this number, sending fake fraud alerts asking you to reply or click links. The difference: real NAB calls from 0438357801 don't ask for passwords or personal details. Scam messages ask you to reply, confirm details over text, or click links. Always verify independently by calling NAB's official number.

Should I call NAB back on 04 3835 7801 if they message me about fraud?

No. Do not call 0438357801 back if they message you first. Instead, use the official NAB phone number on the back of your card or their website. This ensures you're speaking to genuine NAB staff. One contributor received a late-night message from 0438357801 that turned out to be a scam impersonation. Multiple legitimate alerts have been confirmed only after the recipient called NAB's official number independently, not by calling back the number in the message.

What details will legitimate NAB staff ask for if they call about fraud?

Legitimate NAB staff calling about fraud will confirm your registered address and discuss specific transactions visible in your account. They will list recent transactions and ask which ones you recognise. They will NOT ask for your password, PIN, card number, or login credentials. One contributor received a legitimate call after a fraud alert on 04 3835 7801; the NAB staffer knew the transaction details without being told, confirmed the address, and explained the card blocking and replacement process. If anyone claiming to be from 0438357801 asks for sensitive credentials, it's a scam.

How can I tell if a message from 04 3835 7801 is real or fake?

Real NAB fraud alerts from 0438357801 describe specific suspicious or fraudulent transactions on your account. Fake ones often ask you to reply, click links, or confirm details by text. The surest test: independently call NAB's official number and ask if they initiated contact. One contributor received a suspicious message at 11:48 PM claiming a $237.07 withdrawal was blocked, but found no matching transaction on their account-a clear sign of impersonation. Another received a legitimate 5 AM alert matching actual account activity, verified by calling NAB's official number and later receiving an official email from No-reply-fraud@nab.com.au. Never rely on the number 04 3835 7801 or 0438357801 alone to confirm legitimacy.
