Suspicious Real Estate SMS from 0431 811 976

One contributor has reported receiving an SMS from 0431 811 976 (also written as 0431811976) impersonating a real estate agent named Melissa. The message promoted an "off market opportunity" and included a link to what appeared to be an internet property listing, designed to look like a legitimate real estate communication.

The SMS included a "STOP" option at the bottom, a common tactic used by spam operators to appear legitimate while harvesting engagement data. When the contributor replied with STOP to 0431 811 976, they immediately received a follow-up call from a different number featuring a recorded message in Chinese, indicating co-ordinated activity across multiple numbers.

What the SMS from 0431 811 976 Contained

The message from 0431 811 976 posed as a real estate professional offering an exclusive off-market property opportunity. The link embedded in the SMS is the primary concern - such links can redirect to phishing pages designed to capture personal information, banking credentials, or install malware.

The inclusion of the STOP option is deliberate. When the contributor responded to this option, it triggered an automated follow-up call from a secondary number, suggesting this operation uses multiple phone numbers to maximise contact attempts and data harvesting. The follow-up call featuring a Chinese-language recording indicates the operation may be internationally based.

Received an sms from this number from someone identifying as Melissa, in a real estate agent's style alerting to a "new off market opp" with a link to what seemed to be an internet property listing, it included the option to "STOP". I elected to reply with the stop, I immediately got a call from another number, which I didn't answer, it left a message with a recording in chinese. Blocked and reported both numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do if I clicked the link in an SMS from 0431 811 976?

If you clicked the link from 0431 811 976, take these steps immediately: Change passwords for all sensitive accounts (banking, email, social media) from a different device, run antivirus software on your phone, monitor your bank and credit card statements for unauthorised activity, and report the incident to ReportCyber at cyber.gov.au. Consider contacting your bank directly to inform them of potential credential compromise from 0431 811 976.

Why did responding STOP to 0431 811 976 trigger a follow-up call?

The STOP option in the SMS from 0431 811 976 was likely a data harvesting tactic rather than a genuine opt-out. When you replied, it confirmed your number as active and triggered an automated follow-up call from an associated number. This multi-channel approach is used to overwhelm targets and gather multiple contact points. Do not reply to any message from 0431 811 976, as any response will be logged and potentially used for further contact attempts.

Is the real estate property listing real if I see it mentioned in a message from 0431 811 976?

No. The property details in the SMS from 0431 811 976 are either fabricated or stolen from legitimate listings and repurposed by scammers. If you are interested in a property, verify it independently by searching on major Australian real estate sites (Domain, REA Group) or contacting the real estate agent directly using contact details from their official website, never from 0431 811 976 or associated numbers.

What information might scammers obtain if I click the link from 0431 811 976?

Links in SMS from 0431 811 976 typically redirect to phishing pages designed to capture: full name, email address, phone number, residential address, date of birth, driver's licence details, bank account information, and login credentials. The combination of SMS engagement data and follow-up calls from 0431 811 976 suggests this operation collects multiple data points to enable identity theft or financial fraud.

Why did 0431 811 976 follow up with a call in a different language?

The follow-up call from a different number after you replied to 0431 811 976 likely originated from an overseas call centre operating an international scam network. The use of multiple numbers, languages, and automated recordings is designed to obscure the operation's location and evade regulation. This indicates 0431 811 976 is part of a larger coordinated campaign rather than isolated spam.

Should I report 0431 811 976 to my mobile provider Optus?

Yes. Contact Optus and inform them that 0431 811 976 sent you a spam SMS with a malicious link. While Optus may not provide individual support for single reports, including 0431 811 976 in formal complaints helps providers track and block patterns of abuse on their network. Also report directly to ACMA (acma.gov.au) and Scamwatch (scamwatch.gov.au) for greater impact.
