This phone number, 0428 237 517 / 0428237517, has raised multiple red flags among Australian users who report receiving unsolicited SMS messages purportedly from Westpac, an established Australian bank. The nature of these messages indicates it is a part of a phishing scam aimed at deceiving unsuspecting individuals.
Understanding the Scam
The majority of users who reported interactions with this number have received texts claiming to be from Westpac, urging them to switch to eStatements for their credit cards or offering other financial-related services. While some respondents noted that Westpac does engage in marketing campaigns to encourage eStatements, the method of communication and the frequency of unsolicited messages strongly indicate that this particular number is not employed by the bank and is instead being used to infiltrate private information.

- Phishing Characteristics: The messages generally contain prompts for users to reply “YES” to voice their approval for changes they did not initiate, a common tactic used in phishing scams to gain personal data.
- Confirmation from Westpac: Some users took the initiative to contact Westpac directly who clarified that this number is not associated with their legitimate marketing campaigns, shining a light on how deceptive these tactics can be.
