The phone number 0424 624 432 / 0424624432 is linked to a series of reported scam SMS messages masquerading as communications from the National Australia Bank (NAB). This puts the recipient on alert, prompting them to call what appears to be a legitimate Australian number. Reviews show that victims were provided with different phone numbers to call, purportedly to resolve this "suspicious activity."

Signs of a Scam

Based on user reviews from our community, several red flags have been highlighted that can help others identify similar scams:

  • Sender Identification: Legitimate bank messages typically display the bank's name clearly and do not begin with "FROM NAB."
  • Reference Numbers: Scammers tend to use overly simplistic reference numbers that follow sequential patterns (e.g., 5678) which is highly unlikely for real financial institutions.
  • Formatting Issues: Genuine messages from banks typically have a professional and consistent format, including properly placed brackets around area codes.
  • Use of Urgency: Scammers create a sense of urgency to trick victims into acting quickly without verifying the situation.

I received the following text from 0450 676 357:

FROM NAB: You've signed in from AUCKLAND, NZ using a new device. If this was NOT you, please call us on 0243445676. REF: YG5678.

I don't even have NAB, so this was an easy spot. Things that jump out to me showing this is scam are as follows: (for people who may not know what to look out for)

- An automated text from your bank won't start with "FROM NAB", it will usually display the banks name where a phone number would be.

- The reference number includes all sequential numbers (5678). Reference numbers are generated at random, and the chances of all of the numbers being sequential is next to none.

- The phone number's area code is not in brackets. The banks put more effort into the grammatical display of its text messages.

Be safe out there people, and remember. Never call the number provided on these messages, call the number you have for your bank.

I received a scam SMS that appeared to be from NAB, stating: "You signed in from AUCKLAND, NZ, with a new device. We categorized this as suspicious activity, please call us on (02) 4826 0253. REF: DV7865." I think it's a fraudulent message.
