Understanding the Call from 0419 891 613

If you've missed a call from 0419 891 613 / 0419891613, it’s important to know you've dodged a bullet. This number has been reported by many users for being associated with an automated scam pretending to be from the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Let's delve deeper into what makes this call suspicious and how you should handle it.

What Kind of Scam Is This?

The call typically involves a recorded message that makes alarming claims regarding your passport being subjected to "unauthorised use". Following this, they ask the recipient to press a number for language selection, enticing you to engage further. The lack of personalisation in their message—such as failing to address you by name—raises immediate red flags, indicating that it's a mass telemarketing scam. This scam often aims to either harvest your personal information or invoke enough fear to lead you to share sensitive details willingly.

Why You Should Hang Up

  • This number is not a legitimate ATO contact. The Australian Tax Office will never request personal information via an automated message or direct telephone call.
  • Engaging with this caller could put your sensitive information, such as your passport number and personal identification, at risk.
  • If you receive such a call, it's advised to hang up immediately. If you're interested in stringing the caller along, proceed with extreme caution and avoid divulging any real details.

How to Protect Yourself

In the current digital age, scams like the one linked to 0419 891 613 / 0419891613 are unfortunately common. Here are some tips to safeguard yourself:

  • Be sceptical of calls claiming urgent issues related to your finances or personal documents.
  • Utilise services like Reverseau and Reverse Phone Lookup Australia to detect potential scam calls.
  • If you're uncertain about a number, it's always better to hang up and research the issue through official channels or websites.

Conclusion

Remember that awareness is your first line of defence against scams. If you’ve encountered 0419 891 613 / 0419891613 or similar numbers, prioritise your privacy and follow up with rigorous checks before engaging.

Call missed.

They left an automated message, which didn't address me by name or any of my details (which would tip you immediately that they were bogus) saying they were from "The Australian Tax Office, your passport has unauthorised use, press 1 for English,2 for Chinese"

Automated clearly and a scam - if you call back or take the call, they'll scrape your details and passport number, at the very least.

Hang up - if you're game, string them along, but don't give any real details at all, especially not your real name and passport number.
