Unpacking the 0418 331 938 / 0418331938 SMS Scam
The phone number 0418 331 938 / 0418331938 has emerged as a notorious hub for scams targeting unsuspecting individuals across Australia. Predominantly reported as an SMS scam purporting to represent ANZ and NAB banks, this number has garnered a significant amount of negative feedback from users.
Type of Scam: Phishing Attempts
User reports consistently label communications from 0418 331 938 / 0418331938 as phishing attempts, aimed at coercing recipients into providing sensitive personal and financial information. Messages received from this number typically include alarming claims regarding locked accounts or the urgent need to update security details. Common scenarios include phrases such as:
- "We regret to inform you that your NAB card is now locked. To unlock please update security details at [link]."
- "Urgent: Account locked! Provide your details to ensure access."
These tactics are engineered to create a false sense of urgency, tricking victims into acting quickly without considering the legitimacy of the source. Notably, most recipients have mentioned that they do not hold accounts with the mentioned banks, debunking the credibility of these texts.
Understanding the Impact
The clear consensus among users is the recognition of these messages as scams. For example, multiple reports on 15 September 2016 indicated that individuals received identical messages about their NAB accounts being locked, with many asserting that they had never been customers of NAB or ANZ.
It’s crucial to realise that these scams rely heavily on exploiting fear and urgency. By preying on emotions, scammers aim to lower the inhibition of potential victims, thereby increasing the likelihood of eliciting the desired information.
Guidelines for Handling Suspicious Messages
If you receive a message from 0418 331 938—or any similar unsolicited SMS—here are a few steps to follow:
- Do not reply or engage: Avoid responding to the number, as this might confirm your number is active, leading to more spam.

- Report the scam: Notify authorities or your mobile service provider so they can take appropriate action to reduce these scams further.
