Understanding the Caller: 0418 291 451
The phone number 0418 291 451 / 0418291451 has raised eyebrows among Australian users, particularly due to its involvement in dubious text messages claiming eligibility for tax refunds. Based on user reports, we classify this number as suspicious, signalling the need for caution rather than immediate panic.
What Users Have Reported
In the most notable report dated 23 April 2023, a user claimed to have received a text message suggesting eligibility for a tax refund of $8960.28 from the ATO. These types of messages typically leverage the trust associated with government agencies to entice users into engaging further. While the initial message may not outright label itself as a scam, it certainly mimics the typical pattern of spam or phishing attempts.
Interestingly, another review from 11 March 2024 indicated that this mobile number is often used by various companies to dispatch promotional messages. The suggestion that the phone number is associated with advertising does not diminish the need for careful investigation; however, it implies that some users might have found legitimate or benign messages coming from the same source. Nonetheless, the varying reports lead to our conclusion: this number is suspicious rather than outright fraudulent.
Evaluating the Risks
- Potential Phishing Scheme: Given the nature of tax refund messages, there's a significant risk of phishing aimed at acquiring personal information.
