Individuals have reported receiving calls from someone purporting to be from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, creating panic by claiming there was an unauthorised charge of $850 on their accounts. This alarming tactic is reportedly a phishing attempt designed to acquire sensitive personal information by making victims download a dubious app called Zoho Assist.

The Scam Explained

This type of scam falls under phishing scams, where the caller fabricates a situation to create urgency, pushing unsuspecting individuals to immediately comply with their requests. In this case, the intent was to install remote access software, granting the caller undue access to personal information and potentially allowing them to drain bank accounts.

User Experiences

Feedback suggests that the caller demonstrated aggressive and persistent behaviour, pressing the recipient to download the app with dubious reassurances about 'bank security'. Such red flags are critical indicators of a scam. Legitimate banks, including Commonwealth Bank, typically do not require customers to download third-party applications for security purposes or to resolve such issues over the phone.

Supposedly someone from the Commonwealth Bank of Aus, said there was a charge of $850 on my card in the US. Then asked me to download "Zoho Assist - customer", an app where its reviews mostly say 'Beware of Scammers'.

I asked them to show me proof on the Commonwealth website that stated they used this app. However, the foreign person on this number kept repeating 'Sir, please download the app for bank security'... Then ended off with 'I believe you are wasting my time'.

Up to your interpretation but I am pretty sure it was a scammer as I didn't even have $850 in my commonwealth account and they were too persistent on getting me to download a third party app...
