Identifying the Scam: 0408 781 739

The phone number 0408 781 739 / 0408781739 has raised significant concerns among users who reported receiving calls from this number. Based on user feedback, it has been classified as a scam, specifically impersonating the Australian Tax Office (ATO). Let’s delve into the alarming details of this scam and how to appropriately handle such calls.

The Nature of the Scam

According to a report dated 22/09/2020, the caller presents as an Australian male using a recorded message. The content of the call claims that the recipient's tax file number has been suspended, a tactic aimed at instilling panic and urgency. The caller immediately pushes for interaction by prompting the listener to 'press 1' to supposedly resolve the issue outside of court.

Understanding the Tactics Used

This type of scam is known as a “phishing” technique, where fraudsters aim to extract personal or financial information by exploiting official bodies, such as the Australian Tax Office. It’s important to note that legitimate organizations, including the ATO, do not operate in this manner. They will formally communicate via mail or through their official channels and never pressure individuals to make immediate decisions over the phone.

How to Deal with Such Calls

  • Don’t Engage: If you receive a call from 0408 781 739 / 0408781739 or any similar number, it’s best to hang up immediately.
  • Verify Directly: If the information they claim pertains to you, contact the ATO directly using their official contact means.
  • Report the Number: Notify authorities of the scam for further investigation. You can report it via the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).

Final Thoughts

In today's digital age, it is vital to stay one step ahead of potential scams. A simple reverse phone lookup can also help users identify numbers that have previously been reported to fit this dubious pattern. Remember, if you are ever in doubt about a call, seek verification through official sources to protect yourself from fraud.

This was a recording of an Australian male, whether it was recorded, or digitally made like Siri, I’m not sure. The recording said that they were from the Australian Tax Office and that my tax file number had been suspended. They then went on saying that I could review the matter by pressing 1 and it would be settled outside of court (extremely dodgy, I would just get an email FROM the ATO) The recording kept stressing to me to press 1.

So I hung up.
