Identifying the Red Flags of 0405 381 904
The number 0405 381 904 / 0405381904 has raised significant concerns among Australian users, prompting several reports categorising it as a suspicious or potentially scam-related phone number. Reports indicate that the number was involved in sending misleading SMS messages purportedly from NAB (National Australia Bank) that aimed to create urgency and deceit.
The Nature of the Scam
In one notable review dated 17/11/2024, a user received an SMS claiming that a transaction of $789.99 was attempted and not authorised. The message alleged the user needed to call a different number, 0344204713, to address this issue. Several inconsistencies in the message raised red flags:
- It did not specify the nature of the transaction.
- The amount mentioned was unusual and did not appear to correlate with the user’s account activity.
- The message was sent from a mobile number, which is atypical for legitimate bank communications.
- Most importantly, reputable banks typically do not request customers to call back via SMS; they communicate directly regarding security issues.
Why You Should Be Cautious
Beyond the alarming specifics of the message, this scenario highlights a common tactic used by scammers known as "phishing." By evoking a sense of urgency or fear regarding one's finances, they leverage sophisticated strategies to elicit personal information from unsuspecting victims. It's critical to recognise that financial institutions like NAB will generally not ask you to make immediate actions based on an SMS or force you to confront supposed fraudulent activity without prior notice.
What You Can Do
If you receive a message from 0405 381 904 / 0405381904 or one that resembles the warning described, we recommend taking the following steps:
- Do Not Respond: Refrain from replying or calling the number provided in the message.
- Verify with the Bank: Contact NAB directly using a number sourced from their official website, not from the SMS.
- Report the Incident: Consider reporting the scam to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) or a trusted consumer protection agency.
- Utilise Reverseau: Use our Reverse Phone Lookup Australia service to identify the number and check for any fraudulent behaviour reported by other users.
